6 Student Tips to Prepare for University Life

6 Tips to Prepare for University Life

You’re about to start your first year of university. Many feelings are passing through you-excitement, joy, maybe even a little bit of anxiety. But hey, that’s totally normal!

Leaving your parents home for the first time, entering a completely different environment and making a bunch of new friends? It sounds scary, but with solid tips to help you prepare yourself mentally and academically, it’ll be a lot easier to handle.

1. Join your class’ social media group

One of the easiest ways to quickly connect with your fellow freshmen is through social media. Look up your class’s social media group and swap IG handles. Don’t be shy! It’s a lot easier to get a conversation going through a screen and helps avoid some of that awkwardness in real life. It’ll make conversation so much easier when you finally meet face to face!

This allows you to get a feel of your coursemates and identify who you can get along with for a lasting friendship. You might even be lucky enough to find a potential roommate (one that keeps personal hygiene, preferably!)

2. Check out the list of clubs and societies

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The same concept applies here! While your academics is important, holing up by yourself in your room all semester is not how you want to spend the best years of your life.

Get out there and mingle! It’s a good idea to join the university’s orientation programme on the first week. That’s when you’ll be introduced to all the active clubs and societies. If you’re a sports person, join a hiking group, or if you love reading, join get those discussions flowing in the book club! Clubs are a great way to connect with peers your age with similar interests. Imagine, a whole weekend dedicated to a Harry Potter movie marathon…isn’t that the dream?

Each society you join will increase your chances of meeting new people and making friends, so don’t miss out!

3. Note down the courses

If you want to give yourself an academic advantage, read up on the courses you’ll be studying so you have a proper understanding of the subject. This will do wonders on the first week of classes, so you won’t be rendered clueless with your poor classmates when the lecturer starts briefing you about the coursework. At least you’ll know what to expect!

If you’re a huge nerd, you could also email your lecturer for a list of reading materials or references to the textbooks you’ll be using in classes. Those textbooks are expensive, not to mention heavy, and are quite the drag to carry around. You could borrow them from the library, but I bet a hundred other students will have the same idea by then. Better to get them early, right?

4. Research on professional development opportunities

It’s every student’s goal to land that dream job. But how?

Well, work experience is always beneficial to any employer. Be on the lookout for organizations that offer professional development activities, such as improving communication skills, learning soft skills, and performing community service. For example, Toastmasters International trains their members to be a confident public speaker while building strong leadership skills. That can help you to score in that class presentation!

If you prefer to invest in your finances, look for a part-time job around the university. You can often find these posted on the student portal or on bulletin boards outside the classroom. These job opportunities are great experiences to put on a resume, and may even lead you to the career of your dreams one day!

5. Practice time management

Balancing a social life and meeting the academic demands of the university will be challenging, but not impossible.

The average student takes 4 – 6 subjects per semester. This is a lot more workload than what you’re used to in high school, so time management is very important. It’ll do you good to plan ahead and prioritize your tasks according to the deadline. You don’t want to end up panicking at the last minute and running back and forth to the printing shop only to lose marks just because you submitted it a few minutes late! (Trust me, it’s happened before).

Also, always remember to take note of the deadlines for each submission. If you miss the due date, you miss the marks!

6. Make amazing memories!

This is your big year, so don’t be camera shy! While you’re out there organizing your first major event or collaborating with friends on a new project, photograph every moment. These moments are a big part of the formative years of your life. Make the most of it while you can!

You might be tempted to quit halfway if it starts to get overwhelming, so be patient. It’s okay to not excel in every subject or perform the best in class. University is where you’re learning to make the best parts of yourself shine, after all. So take your time.

You may get homesick time to time, and be tempted to call it quits and head home. But keep one thing in mind: while living alone may take some time to get used to and the workload is more challenging; the gains are far more rewarding and satisfying.

Ideal Destination For A Better Education – Malaysia

Ideal Destination For A Better Education - Malaysia

Looking for a destination to study overseas?

There is a saying “you can’t love what you don’t know.”

Well, that applies to Malaysia.

When people think of Asia, a vast array of different elements comes to mind. Rich culture and history, amazing food, bustling cities, lush green tropics, amazing shopping, and dirt-cheap prices… the list goes on.

But when you thumb through the various countries nestled into the massive continent of Asia, there is one that seems to hold a ‘greatest hits’ of all the categories… Malaysia is the destination that has it all!

A tropical destination awaits students who wish to study in Malaysia.

If you’re looking to get your higher education in Malaysia and got a little scared researching what it could be like – fear not. We did some digging ourselves and found reasons why Malaysia should be on the list for international students so that you too can make your dream come true.

In this article, we’ll present several reasons why Malaysia is a great study destination for international students. Let’s get started!

Question of the day: What makes Malaysia so enticing to students from all over the globe? We’d say, the low living costs!

#1 Strategic Destination With Low Living Costs

Yes, you are right!

Reasonable cost of living is a major deciding factor for international students in choosing Malaysia as their preferred destination in furthering their higher education. While your actual cost of living will depend on the geographical location of your university and your personal lifestyle, there is not much to worry about.

Buckle up, folks! Now we’re taking you on an interesting journey!

Students will be pleased to know that Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, has been ranked as one of the least expensive cities in the world to live in. A survey on the ‘Most Affordable Cities for Students between 2016 and 2018’ by QS University Ranking found that “Kuala Lumpur has received a good score for affordability, with a combination of low living costs and relatively low tuition fees”.

Amazing, isn’t it?

This shows that the city is well-suited for students who are looking for an affordable living environment. To make it realistic, here we make a rough calculation; for most students, a monthly budget of RM2000 (US$500) will provide them with a comfortable living in Malaysia as the total expenditure for accommodation – either on-campus or off-campus – is cheap.

Sounds too good to be true, right? But that’s what Malaysia has got to offer to you.

#2 Affordable Study Destination With Reasonable Tuition Fees

Many people shy away from applying for university in the country because they feel that the tuition fees might be too high for international students.

Well, the truth is that studying in Malaysia is considered inexpensive when compared to the other study destinations around the world. We know for sure that students will always choose reasonable universities to further their study (been there, done that!).

Choosing the cheapest universities in the country is an excellent option for those looking for an affordable education as an international student. So, here in Malaysian universities, professional degrees such as MBA (Master of Business Administration) and MBSS (Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery) for example, can be obtained by paying low tuition fees. (Please bear in mind that these figures change according to your programme or course of study, so the numbers here are an average).

The cost of tuition fees is affordable enough and with proper planning, students can make preparations for their studies in Malaysian universities. Think you can’t afford higher education in Malaysia? Think again.

#3 Variety Of Foods

With roots and influences from the Chinese, Indians, and even British colonialists, Malaysia is one of the world’s greatest melting pot.

The entire world – its influences, ancient features, and modern touches – are all tucked inside this eclectic country. And with a true cultural melting pot comes…. food!

If you need more reason to love Malaysia, there is the abundance of gastronomic delights – with thousands of hawker stalls, cafes, and restaurants serving every imaginable type of delicacies, tantalizing Asian cuisine, and bustling night markets that remain open until the wee hours of the morning. This is perfect for students who want to hang out with their friends or to de-stress. Not to mention there are a lot of choices to choose from.

The diversity of Malaysia enriches its foods and flavour. There is no other country that creates unique dishes such as roti canai, nasi lemak, and nasi ayam. When you blend Malay, Chinese, and Indian cuisine together, gastro perfection is inevitable! Without a doubt, Malaysia has one of the top cuisines in the world due to incredible taste and extremely excellent value. Trust us, there will be no days of you starving as everything is here (you name it, we have it!).

Now, Malaysia has a place in your mind, right? Hurry up and pack your things, Malaysia here I come!

Career Concerns – Stepping Into Your First Job

Career Concerns - Stepping Into Your First Job

Are you ready for your first career?

A major relief after a big exam, passing with flying colours and untoward a new journey – your first official career.

However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, how does the future look like? According to Statista, the unemployment rate peaked in 2009 and has been fluctuating ever since and in 2020, the rate currently is at 3.38%. Although it is relatively low, the main category of job seekers is young people – both the fresh graduates and those still looking for opportunities. We’ve compiled six simple ways to make your job search easier, which you can find here.

Trying to acclimate yourself into a new environment, in this case, your new workplace, can be both exhausting and exciting at the same time. The main thing you would want to do is impress your Manager(s) while proving that you were a good fit for the position.

Well, it is good to have the drive but the key to being good at your career is to not overdo it. Learn from experience, be open to constructive criticism and take one step at a time.

In order to get ahead in this new era, practice these five important tips religiously to get ahead in your new position.

1. Happy Superiors, Happy Career

Treat your superiors with respect for a good career kickstart.

Get off on the right foot with your superiors by getting to know them. Find out the culture of the workplace and never step over the line of any rule (in other words, don’t be a rebel!). Get to know their working style too. For example, some superiors prefer simple presentations or detailed reports as well as working with other departments. Take the first step by initiating a meeting with your boss to discuss their working style and adapt. This assists you in settling in your new role faster and to set clear expectations of your role.

2. Your Chemistry With Colleagues Makes Or Breaks Your Career

Your colleagues are important people in your career.

As important as getting to know your superiors, you should do the same with your co-workers. The earlier you build a good rapport with them, the quicker you can adapt into the organisation. Start off by trying to remember their names (we know it’s hard if there are many to remember but the keyword here is ‘try’) and keep eye contact while talking. It is also best to understand your new team-mates’ roles and responsibilities while being respectful towards them.

3. Adapt To Change & Ace Your Job

Succeed in your first career by being open to change.

Adapting to a new lifestyle and meeting new people that are more experienced can be as daunting as ever. However, adapt to the whole situation by changing your mind-set and learn from the new environment. The transition from one world to another will be a smoother one, and faster than you think.

4. Be Confident In Your Career

Being confident can have a positive effect when stepping into a new world of possibilities, but be mindful that respect comes with it. Be it your Manager or associate, never be afraid to ask questions so that you can know if you are doing your job in the right manner. No question is a senseless question, but it is always helpful to ask better questions.

5. Be A ‘Sponge’

Reading improves your knowledge and career performance.

In order to adapt, widening your knowledge by being open-minded and exposing yourself to new experiences can be beneficial. Park your ego at the door and you are bound to face an endless world of learning. Remember that you are joining experienced individuals and they will have the respect and patience should you take some time to understand their working culture.

In no time, you will join your colleagues and feel like you’ve been in the organization since forever, in a good way of course.

Fun Things To Do At Home During Quarantine

Fun Things To Do At Home During Quarantine

Remember when we had a bunch of fun things to do at home without being bored?

It seems so long ago, doesn’t it? I recall the thrill of cancelling plans because it meant enjoying the comfort and coziness of home. But now that we’re stuck at home most of the time, it starts to feel dull. We begin to miss the freedom that came with travelling. We yearn to get away or ‘escape’ because staying at home gets repetitive and dull. Feel the same way?

If you do, don’t fret! We’ve compiled a list of things you can do to make things more exciting at home. After all, being home doesn’t mean you can’t have fun.

1. Meme-ify your friends

There’s no better way to test the strength of your friendships by bringing out the ugliest, oldest, most embarrassing pictures of your friends to light. These are definitely stellar blackmail material, but you know what’s even better? Turning them into your own personal sticker collection!

Apps like ISticker and Wemoji are available on Playstore for this purpose. The app allows you to add your own text and emojis to the sticker, so go nuts! Pick the most embarrassing photos, crop them out, and insert a witty caption. There you have it, your very own personal sticker collection. Now, no one can say you’ve been hoarding photos for no reason

2. Do a dance workout

Dance workouts are a great way to sweat without feeling like you’re actually working out. To double up the fun, do a video call with your friends for a group dance workout. Turn up the music, put on your best workout gear, and start grooving to the music. Since no one will be going out to clubs for a long time, you might as well polish up some dance moves while you can. YouTubers such as MadFit and Pamela Reif showcase simple dance routines that are really easy to follow, so even if you’re not a great dancer you’ll still be able to follow them. Get sweaty and get moving!

3. Create a personality test

Want to test your friends’ knowledge of you? Create your own quiz on and fill it up with random questions only your closest friends would know. This is a great way to test if they’ve actually been paying attention to your life updates or not. Don’t make it too easy, the challenge is for them to see if they really know you after all. If they get more than half correct, treat them to a meal. If they fail, it’s their treat!

4. Participate in a viral challenge

There’s nothing as effective as a quarantine to truly test the limits of our creativity. Boredom has led to some of the most hilarious social media challenges of the year. We’ve had the Pillow Challenge, Flip The Switch Challenge, Don’t Rush Challenge, and Tiny Face Make-Up Challenge. Most of them are really easy to do and only require a smart phone and someone else to record, so why not give them a try?

It’s a good excuse to get all dressed up with your friends and create something memorable that you can look back on in the future and laugh about! Bella Poarch is a good example who went viral on tiktok and now the most followed tiktoker user.

5. Conduct a mock interview

If you’ve got a bunch of free time on your hands, why not use it to prepare for future job interviews?

You can always practice by speaking in front of a mirror, but since it’s likely the interview will be done online, it’s a good idea to get used to this set-up quickly. If your friends are willing to help, ask them to play the role of the interviewer over a video call and “interview” you. It’s a good opportunity to improve your interview skills and craft the best answers so you’re not caught unaware when a potential job opportunity asks you a question like “So where do you see yourself in 5 years?”

This is where it’s okay to mess up. And you can always rely on your friends to give you honest, constructive feedback!

6. Have a virtual game session

With more people looking for entertainment online, mobile games such as Among Us have risen in popularity. The game has a simple objective: to identify the impostor on a spaceship and eject them from the crew. Players have to complete simple tasks on the ship and call for an ‘emergency meeting’ if they come across anything suspicious. This pits the players against one another as they try to defend their innocence and locate the impostor before the ship is sabotaged. Thus begins the game of lies, betrayal, secrets, and friendships ruined. Beware, though, you might not trust anything your friends say again after this.

To spice things up, do a group call over Discord and watch as your friends start to turn on each other. That’s when the drama really begins!

7. Lose yourself to podcasts

From binge-watching season after season on Netflix, the same fever has taken on podcasts. A popular one is ‘Rice To Meet You’, hosted by comedian Nigel Ng and Evelyn Mok. It covers entertaining content about the modern Asian experience, which is both hilarious and relatable. You may recognise the host as Uncle Roger, the UK-based comedian who went viral on YouTube with his ‘Egg Fried Rice’ video a while ago. If you’ve watched his videos, no doubt you’ll enjoy his podcast as well!

Another noteworthy podcast to follow is The Rumah Roy on Spotify. They cover a wide variety of topics from geek culture, movie production, to education, activism, and mental health, so if you want to expand your knowledge on these, drop by their page to listen!

The great thing about podcasts is that you can do other things while listening to it. If you’re walking the dog or doing the laundry, these podcasts can make it seem more fun than it really is!

8. Join a live stream event

You’d be surprised to note that there are events still ongoing, they’ve just been moved online. In conjunction with Peaxtix’s Music Week, Peatix has collaborated with several musicians to continue to bring you good music.

One of our local bands, An Honest Mistake, is streaming their show ‘An Honest Christmas’ online so that everyone can enjoy the spirit of a Christmas party from home. You can look forward to some good ol’ R&B vibes, electro-pop, and a good DJ set to end the night on. Tickets can be purchased here. Be sure to check out the guest performers as well!

We may have to hit pause on going out for now, but life continues. Don’t stop living your life just because freedom is more restricted than usual. There’s always a way to have fun on our own, we just have to try harder. As the saying goes, when there’s a will, there’s a way.

TikTok – Not Just Another Silly App But An Actual Learning Tool

TikTok - Not Just Another Silly App But An Actual Learning Tool

So, you’ve probably heard your parents saying, “What is this TikTok and why you are on it so much?” or “Why waste time on TikTok when you could be learning other important things online?” You see, we know how awesome TikTok can be. But for the life of us, some of our parents just can’t seem to comprehend the awesomeness of TikTok. They don’t even approve of the idea. And as much as it pains you to hear them nagging, maybe it’s time to educate them a little on the benefits of TikTok. Because they’d be surprised to know at how much you (and even they) can learn through the fastest growing social media app. Now, let’s show them all the colours and rainbows of TikTok (or at least the top 6 benefits of it) and see if you’re able to change their mind-set.

Benefit #1: You Learn Videography & Directing Skills Through TikTok

Yup, we’re learning important skills on TikTok. Skills that we can apply in class and the working world. This app enables us to learn all about video editing such as basic cutting, audio precisions, transitions and more. There are so many cool tips and tricks we can learn from TikTok influencers too, especially on how they create and edit their videos. So basically, we get to be a director of our profile and that’s pretty cool.

Benefit #2: Yes, TikTok Builds Your Confidence
Two girls browsing TikTok content on a smartphone.

Not all of us were born lucky to have the confidence of a lion. Some of us are just naturally shy or have the classic case of stage fright. So, TikTok is one of the great platforms that encourages you to improve your self-esteem by practising your pronunciation and speaking skills in front of the camera. This can be useful especially during school, college and work presentations.

Benefit #3: TikTok Trains Discipline
Students editing a TikTok video on a laptop.

How is TikTok preparing you to be disciplined, you say? Well, TikTokers often feel satisfied or accomplished when we get to execute our TikTok perfectly. It takes a great amount of effort and determination – qualities that we can apply to other areas and aspects of our lives such as homework, assignments, hobbies, and other passions or interests.

Benefit #4: Unleashing Our Creativity

We get to explore our imagination and get creative by coming up with all sorts of different ideas for TikTok. This will help us in the real world especially when it comes to professions like advertising, digital, social media and so on. Not only does this part benefits us, but it has also benefited some of the teachers around the world as they have become tech-savvy and even used TikTok’s videography features to develop creative assignments. We find that we can absorb and learn better through TikTok rather than sticking to the traditional lecture-based lessons and homework all the time. We also feel that this will bring the relationship between us and our teachers closer, as it is refreshing to see them step into our world.

Benefit #5: Learning Valuable Information & Skills
A group of girls speaking using a microphone.

You can pick up numerous talents out there on TikTok. Skills like baking, cooking, dancing, acting and useful information like skincare, maths (yes people, even maths!), languages, culture and the list goes on. You pretty much get to see and explore a bunch of tutorials on TikTok and the majority of them are pretty entertaining too. If not, why else would we be hooked on it? While we’re at it, here are some TikTokers you should follow and showcase to your parents for convincing purposes.

Benefit #6: Earning Side Income
Girl posing with makeup brushes for a TikTok video.

You’d be surprised to know much TikTokers make. According to Marvellous, influencers with up to 100k followers can earn between $500 and $2000 for sponsored posts in their videos. This value will also depend on the type of product, the number of followers, and engagement rate. Not bad for doing something that you like, right?

So, there you have it, folks! These benefits are just the tip of the iceberg. We hope your parents will see TikTok the way we do and who knows, maybe they’ll join in on the fun too? Well, you won’t know until you show them this article so, good luck!
