I Took A Gap Year After High School To Study Abroad. Here’s Why.

Taking A Gap Year: How I Made It To Study Abroad Right After High School

I decided to study abroad right after graduating from high school.

Truthfully, I had no idea what I wanted to study. I didn’t want to give the impression that I was not spending my summer holidays productively, plus I needed some time to really think about my future.

So, I opted for a gap year.

A gap year is a year-long break that students take between the end of high school and starting college. It is a great option to gain new experiences and travel, work, or explore personal interests before continuing your studies.

For someone like me who remained undecided about my future, taking a gap year was actually the break I needed. Without the pressure to make a quick decision, I would have enough time to invest in myself and explore other alternatives.

My Gap Year Decision: Volunteering Abroad

The first thing that came to my mind was to volunteer overseas. I had always aspired to help the local community somehow, and this was my chance!

While I was looking up volunteer programs online, I came across an academy that sparked my interest with these programs; I could choose to help set up housing for the local community in Peru, or teach English as a foreign language to young children in Switzerland. Since I was more confident in my English-speaking skills, I decided to go with the latter. I enquired with the university about these programs, and in no time, they connected me to a counsellor.

I told the counsellor about my decision to take a gap year and seek out opportunities for personal development. Upon hearing my interest to teach English abroad, she recommended I take a TEFL certificate (Teaching English As A Foreign Language).

Volunteers taking a gap year to help the poor.

She explained that this certificate would prepare me to understand the aspects of becoming a teacher abroad while experiencing a different way of life. I would learn how to plan lessons, manage the classroom, and accommodate to each student’s learning ability. As a teacher, I had a chance to make a real difference in the lives of these students. Also, did I mention this job was paid? Not only could I gain experience overseas, but I would be paid for it!

Volunteering In Switzerland

My time in Switzerland was an eventful and productive one.

I was assigned as a junior teacher to teach English at a summer camp for young children aged between 6 to 14 years old. The summer camp was basically a holiday program for kids to experience a variety of sports, language and outdoor activities, so their schedule was pretty packed.

In one day, I would be teaching 3 to 4 sessions of English to the students before accompanying them to their next class. Since the camp was mostly run by volunteers, I had to pitch in to help with the cooking and cleaning from time to time. It was there that I discovered a newfound respect for the other volunteers, because they were so dedicated in their tasks that they didn’t mind putting in extra effort to ensure the students would have an enjoyable experience.

Sleepless nights were common, because we had to wake up earlier than the students to prepare breakfast and materials. One time, the teacher in charge of physical activity got injured, so I had to take over for a while. Trying to instruct a bunch of hyperactive kids in the morning to follow exercise routines was not an easy task, I assure you!

Aside from teaching, I also spent time baking sweet goodies for everyone. The children particularly enjoyed the peanut butter cookies I often prepared for their evening snack. Watching them savor the cookies and ask for more made me realize something I never felt before—a deep sense of fulfilment.

I had discovered what I wanted to pursue.

Choosing To Study Culinary Arts

The volunteer program only lasted for three weeks, but to me, it felt like a lifetime. I had gained new experiences and the time I spent with these amazing people changed me. I had gained a new sense of confidence and felt empowered to make a decision for my future. My family was pretty surprised when I said I wanted to stay in Switzerland.

I had made up my mind to study Culinary Arts. I had learned so much about the country during my time here, that it felt like a waste to go back without trying to learn even more. I talked to my education counsellor about the choices I could go for. I had my sights set on the Swiss Education Group, a prestigious school in Switzerland that held the Top 10 rankings in the world for their subjects in Culinary Arts.

I needed to apply for another student permit to extend my stay in Switzerland, but the approval heavily depended on my acceptance to the institution. My counsellor was extremely helpful in the process, giving me the best tips to write my personal statement and compiling all the relevant documents. If it wasn’t for her, I doubt I could have submitted my application on time!

That Fateful Day

I still remember the day the news arrived.

I was in the kitchen trying out a new recipe, when the phone rang. It was my counsellor on the other side, waiting to inform me of my application status. I still hear those words in my head as clear as day.

“Congratulations, you’ve been accepted as a student at the Culinary Arts Switzerland Academy!”

My reaction when I found out I was accepted into the university after a gap year.

It turned out that my volunteer experience was a huge reason they decided to accept my application. I showed initiative, ambition and passion in my work, and these were the exact qualities they wanted to see in potential students. I was ecstatic with joy!

My decision to take a gap year and volunteer abroad was not in waste. In fact, it proved to be the turning point in which I found my passion and discovered new things about myself. I was able to take a step forward and make a decision that would change my life.

If I can, you can do it too!

Is Studying Abroad Worth It During The Pandemic?

Is Studying Abroad Worth It During The Pandemic?

KUALA LUMPUR, 28.5.2021 – Students are struggling to proceed with their study abroad plans during the Covid-19 pandemic, with many of them questioning its worth.

According to a survey regarding the impact of Covid-19 on study abroad conducted by educations.com in October 2020, 39% out of 2,700 prospective students plan to postpone their studies in response to the pandemic.

However, the benefits of studying abroad remain advantageous in spite of the pandemic.

Students gain a unique experience while studying overseas. It broadens their mind as they learn to live independently. This helps them to be aware of their own responsibilities and the impact of their actions, which contributes to a mature mindset.

Students will also develop better intercultural communication skills that enable them to flourish in a culturally diverse environment.

A study was conducted by Dr. Tracy Rundstrom Williams from Texas Christian University to determine the impact of studying abroad on students’ intercultural communication.

“The results showed that as predicted, the students who studied abroad generally showed a greater increase in intercultural communication skills than the students who did not study abroad, and students who chose to study abroad had a higher level of intercultural communication skills at the beginning and at the end of the semester than students who did not choose to study abroad.”

Additionally, the experience serves as an investment to one’s career. Besides self-discovery, students gain knowledge and skills that are useful in the workplace. For instance, they learn a new language while expanding their international network.

Through volunteer work, internships, and part-time jobs, their experience abroad adds up to an impressive resume that employers look for.

While the cost of studying abroad may be higher compared to local universities, scholarships and financial aid for international students are now largely accessible.

The closure of international borders was implemented to control the spread of the virus. Throughout 2020, the pandemic had forced students to decline offers from overseas universities and opt for local universities instead.

In Malaysia, the number of students studying abroad had decreased from more than 73,000 in 2019 to only 39,882 in 2020.

However, students are encouraged to proceed with their study abroad plans in 2021 as borders are reopening to international students. Furthermore, the increasing availability of the Covid-19 vaccination means that students will soon be able to travel abroad for their studies.

Universities are also implementing strict SOPs to control the spread of the virus, such as implementing social distancing measures around campus and ensuring that all students check in their attendance when attending classes.

Hence, students can be assured that they can still pursue their studies abroad.

Eduloco can help students study abroad amidst the pandemic. As a study abroad and student recruitment agency, Eduloco offers free virtual consultations, as well as assisting students in university and Visa applications.

Working While Studying: 6 Reasons You Should Do It Too

Working While Studying: 6 Reasons You Should Do It Too

Stop sleeping on the benefits of working while studying!

Many students think that having a job in their college years is distracting. However, the benefits you will gain must not be ignored. Besides making money, working while studying abroad will contribute to your future career which makes your life better in the long run.

Don’t believe us? Here are some reasons why you should do it too.

1) Build A Solid Portfolio

Working while studying abroad builds the best portfolio, period.

While exploring new places during semester breaks makes studying abroad fun, you should spend some time gaining skills outside your university. The best way to do so is by freelancing or taking on a part-time job. It is worth including your work experience in your portfolio or resume, no matter how basic it is. That could serve as a good starting point that companies are looking for in a fresh graduate!

For example, companies may prefer hiring someone with a background in video and image editing software. Your part-time gig as a creative artist may serve as a long-term investment that can guarantee a position in your dream company. This gives you an advantage over your peers who might not be as driven to search for opportunities to build their skills.

2) Gain Valuable Job Experience

Like it or not, your certificate may not be enough to impress employers. Now more than ever, they want individuals who are already equipped with the necessary skills to contribute to the company’s performance.

If you’re already sure about your career path, we suggest taking up a job that is closely related to your field of course. Your effort of working while studying will pay off, as your work experience boosts your learning and career advancement as you add new skills to your belt.

3) Earn Income And Avoid Debts

Travelling and buying what you want with your hard-earned money surely hits different.

Working while studying abroad gives you the opportunity to earn sufficient money to fund your daily necessities, travel plans, and lifestyle. Imagine the excitement of earning and saving enough money to cross out things from your bucket list!

The money you earn also pays off your student debt. If you’re diligent enough, you might even be debt-free by the time you graduate. All the money that you earn from then on will fully be yours!

4) Learn Time Management Skills

Have you heard of time wastage?

It is a common phenomenon in college, where there are plenty of distractions that keep students from focusing on their tasks. Here’s an example: You spend most of your time chatting away with your friends while the supposed purpose of the meet-up was to complete your group assignment. That is wasting your precious time!

Time management is an essential skill, especially in the workplace. What’s better than to learn it in your youth, where you learn to juggle between college activities and your part-time job? Working while studying gives you a clearer view of your priorities. Hence, you eventually adjust to the real world once you begin your career after graduation.

5) Mature With Real-life Situations

Working while studying abroad helps you to mature as a professional and as an individual. Unfortunately, many college graduates feel overwhelmed by the challenges in the real world due to lack of exposure. In fact, 4 out of 10 American college students feel unprepared for their careers. Real-life experience from your job provides the best lessons as you learn to adapt to the situation around you.

Here’s an example from my personal experience: I offered to help a mute and deaf customer at a retail outlet I was working in. After 30 minutes of Q&A on paper, she finally left with two pairs of jeans, with a smile on her face. I was humbled by the experience and learned that we shouldn’t discriminate our customers.

The experience that you will gain while working as a college student will boost your confidence and maturity. Your future employer will also find it easier to entrust bigger responsibilities to you.

6) Create Global Connections

You are bound to gain a global network while working in an international environment. You can use this to your advantage when you’re looking for a job, because some companies prefer hiring candidates with an international social network.

Working while studying abroad also helps you to gain knowledge about local culture that is beyond what you will learn in college. Besides, you can overcome the language barrier as you mingle with your colleagues. That’s a new addition in your resume that will impress your employer!

Top Countries That Offer The Opportunity

Each country has its own rules when it comes to granting international students a working while studying permit. However, you will also find certain countries that are quite lenient with it. Here are some countries that will make it easier for you to earn some cash while you study:

Here are common jobs that international students can pursue:

  • Waiting Tables

You’re bound to meet a few Karens every now and then, but nothing beats the experience and social network you gain while waiting tables at local restaurants. This is also an opportunity for you to brush up your communication and language skills.

  • Tutoring

If you’re an English speaker studying in a non-English speaking country, you can offer tutoring services to the local community. The best way to look for a tutoring job is through your local friends and lecturers. They’ll be happy to help!

  • Internships

The fastest way to score an internship is through your professors. They will usually connect you with people from the industry who can offer you a position in their company.

Are you excited to start a double adventure? Eduloco can help you pursue that dream. As a study abroad agency, we have multiple partnerships with international universities that offer the best of higher education.

BONUS: We can assist you with your university and Visa application too!

Update On Canadian Borders For International Students

Update On Canadian Borders For International Students

KUALA LUMPUR, 24.5.2021 – The Canadian borders are allowing international students entry into the country under the condition that they attend an institution with a COVID-19 readiness plan.

As of October 2020, the Canadian borders have reopened to give way for international students to pursue their studies, announced the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Marco Mendicino.

In order to commence their studies, international students must attend a designated learning institution (DLI), or a school that is approved by the Government to accept international students.

The DLIs must have a COVID-19 readiness plan that:

  • Acts as a safeguard for the health and safety of students and the community;
  • Informs how the school arranges quarantine for international students, which includes transportation and location;
  • Supports international students with their needs, such as food and medications (during quarantine), health insurance, and their overall well-being throughout their stay.

International students must observe a 14-day self-isolation prior to their entry and present proof of a negative COVID-19 test.

Additionally, they are required to take another test upon arrival, as well as undergoing quarantine in a government-approved hotel for three days while waiting for the results.

International students are required to apply for a study permit. According to Canada.ca, students who have submitted their applications by May 15, 2021 will receive their results by August 6, 2021, which aligns with admissions for the fall semester.

However, the Government does not guarantee that students who apply after the submission date will receive a final decision before fall semester commences.

Students must apply online and submit the following documents:

  • Letter of acceptance from the DLI
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of financial support
  • Letter of explanation to explain the absence of certain documents
  • Custodian declaration (for minors only)
  • Certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ)

As the Canadian Federal Government has allowed international students to enter despite strict border restrictions, universities are also diligently supporting students until further clarification regarding the status of international students are made.

“Canada’s universities respect the importance of the Government of Canada’s measures in protecting the health and safety of Canadians and are working closely with our member universities to understand the impacts of these measures,” Cindy McIntyre explained, assistant director of international relations at Universities Canada.

Meanwhile, students are encouraged to stay at home for their online classes and practice social distancing measures on campus.

In The Midst Of The COVID 19 Pandemic: Is Studying Abroad Still An Option?

The Impact of COVID 19 Restrictions and Should You Still Study Abroad

The COVID 19 pandemic has affected many significant industries around the world.

In the education sector, students have been forced to put a halt to their plans of studying abroad. With tight SOP’s, travel bans, and the rising number of cases around the world, it is clear that students need to change their study plans and consider if it is really the best thing to study abroad during this time.

The Impact Of COVID 19 Restrictions

In a QS survey done in February 2020, it was reported that only 27% of students stated that the coronavirus had impacted their plans to study abroad.

However, the numbers continued to surge, more and more students have stated that they would be deferring their studies. As of March 2020, 35% respondents said that their study plans had changed, with 54% choosing to defer their studies next year, 14% no longer wanting to study abroad, and 13% opting to study in a different country.

Educations.com, revealed that 78% of potential students still aspired to study abroad in the next two years, indicating a strong desire for overseas study despite the pandemic.

Therefore, the option to continue one’s studies is possible, but students have to be aware of the challenges that presents itself within studying in the new normal.

Universities have started implementing online solutions as an alternative for students to continue their lessons, such as online classes and virtual appointments. Majority of classes will also be run virtually to reduce risk of infection and spread.

This introduces a new method of teaching known as blended learning, which includes a mix of virtual lectures with face-to-face tutorials, providing students a chance to meet up in class and discuss their group assignments with social distancing measures in place.

Should You Still Study Abroad?

Studying abroad is a great way to stand out to prospective employers. The experience that students gain can help improve their language skills, develop international connections, and gain a broader perspective on global issues.

Hence, students are encouraged to continue their studies if they are able to adapt to the online learning environment.

Educations.com reports that 33% of prospective students are willing to study online until the COVID 19 restrictions passes. This indicates that students are not only aware that online learning will be a big part of their study abroad experience, but are also prepared to accommodate to the situation at hand.

Students can speak to the universities they want to apply to and ask about the new learning measures that will be implemented during their duration of study. Aside from online learning, universities are also working on implementing safety measures on campus, such as encouraging students to wash their hands regularly and ensuring hand sanitizers are readily available throughout campus.

On the contrary, there is also the option of delaying study abroad plans. If students are not in a hurry to continue their studies, they can opt for a gap year and wait until the situation clears up. In the meantime, they can keep active by learning an online course, taking an internship, or engaging in voluntary work.

Despite things looking a little grim, it is important that students keep an open mind and be flexible to changes.

There are several steps to applying for a Visa, which is quite complicated. • How much does the course cost?
  • Am I eligible to apply for this course?
  • What requirements do I need to fulfill?
  • Are there any scholarships available?
  • Can I work while studying abroad?

5) A Mentor For Guidance

UK Borders Now Open For International Students To Enter

UK Borders Now Open For International Students To Enter

KUALA LUMPUR, 20.5.2021 – International students can now further their studies in the United Kingdom with a negative Covid-19 test result prior to entering the borders, as ruled by the government in early 2021.

A 10-day self-isolation is also compulsory upon arrival.

During isolation, students are required to take further tests on the second and eighth day, and, if tested positive, must remain quarantined for a further 10 days.

The safety and well-being of students are a top priority. Hence, UK universities are efficiently adapting to the new normal to uphold their world-class higher education standards.

“As we rebuild from the global pandemic we want the world’s brightest talent, who aspire to a career at the highest levels of business, science, the arts and technology to see our country as the natural place to fulfil their aspirations,” said Kevin Foster, the Minister for Future Borders and Immigration.

Most UK universities have established Covid-19 preventative measures, such as assigning appropriate entry and exit points, providing sanitizing stations, and putting up social distancing markings on the floor.

Additionally, international students will receive Covid-19 support services from their universities which consist of helplines, counselling, and airport-pick-up services.

International students travelling to the United Kingdom must submit a passenger locator form 48 hours prior to their arrival. The online form, which can be found on the UK government website requires students’ passport information, travel details, and their UK address.

During their stay, students are expected to observe the legal requirement to wear a face mask in public transports, shops, indoor spaces, and crowded areas.

UK universities are shifting towards flexible and hybrid learning options while maintaining their quality of teaching. Although campuses remain open, online lectures have replaced physical classes, and face-to-face tutoring is limited whenever applicable.

This new practice is expected to bring a positive and innovative change to their traditional teaching methods while ensuring social distancing among students and staff.

Eduloco x University of Chester: Harboring A Mission To Help Students Study Abroad

KUALA LUMPUR, 19.5.2021 – Recently, Eduloco has added another institution to their growing list of partnerships under their belt.

The University of Chester, founded by the Church of England in 1839, offers an inclusive, open environment that accepts students of all nationalities to grow and thrive within a diverse community.

With a mission to make a positive impact on the lives of its students, the institution recognizes the worth of each individual and supports them to discover their talent to grow into their full potential.

This aligns with Eduloco’s values in providing a personalized consultation to students of all background, regardless of their academic prowess and financial status. Hence, the agency makes an effort to understand the student’s circumstances and educational needs before moving on to the next stage.

“Eduloco exists to help students study abroad. We see every student as their own individual and each of them is deserving of an education that can help them grow into their potential as world-class citizens,” Thalia Bondoc stated, project manager of Eduloco.

“Our partnership with the University of Chester has opened more doors for students to study abroad as they have options from studying in the United Kingdom, France, China, and Southeast Asia,” she added. “By assisting students to access these study destinations, they can achieve greater opportunities for their future career.”

The University offers several opportunities for travel and learning where students who aspire to study abroad can gain overseas experience through internship placements, volunteer activities, and summer school.

Through their affiliation with the university, Eduloco continues to dedicate itself to providing excellent study abroad opportunities and supporting students in their professional growth and development.

These started out as a hobby for ‘fun’, but they come close to being obsessions these days.
