Eduloco X Plymouth University: A Partnership Geared Towards Sustainability In Higher Education

KUALA LUMPUR, 28.6.2021 – Eduloco has stepped up as a recruitment platform to support the global movement towards sustainability with Plymouth University.

Based in England, Plymouth University is recognized as an innovative leader for sustainability in higher education. Their education system is research-intensive and well-established in sustainability practices, experiential education and civic engagement.

Professor Judith Petts, Vice-chancellor of Plymouth University, stated that the university was so much more than a degree-awarding academy.

“We are drivers for economic innovation and advancement, catalysts for social change and champions of cultural development,” she said.

The university empowers students to conduct key research projects on creating awareness for environmental sustainability and conceiving solutions for conservation efforts. As acknowledgement of their work, they were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize three times for the following achievements; the discovery of microplastics, conservation solutions for the global marine sector, and widening access to education in rural communities.

Eduloco strongly believes that sustainability is the forefront for change. With an alarming rise of environmental issues such as global warming, water pollution and deforestation, the recruitment platform is joining hands with the institution to drive students to be a stimulant for environmental change.

“We believe that partnering with an institution that empowers sustainability is a great investment in helping students to be the leaders of tomorrow and achieve a greener, sustainable future,” Thalia Bondoc stated, project manager of Eduloco.

With a ranking of the Top 25 in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, Plymouth University continues to advance knowledge and transform lives through teaching and research in sustainability education.

UK University Students Demand For Refund As Online Learning Continues

UK University Students Demand For Refund As Online Learning Continues

KUALA LUMPUR, 28.6.2021 – Universities are planning to combine in-person and online lectures this autumn, prompting students to seek a refund for part of the fees that they were charged per year.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, universities have shifted to online learning to prevent the virus from spreading. The exact blend of physical and online lectures will be determined by the vaccination of young people and the rules of social distancing.

However, this execution raised much dissatisfaction among students who have been learning online for nearly three years. They have been paying full costs for online lectures that range from YouTube tutorials to Zoom lectures, which were deemed unpractical for students belonging to certain majors that require in-person learning.

Rhian Shilabeer, politics student from the University of Kent was among the students affected by the universities’ new implementation.

“It’s just not fair to charge £9,250 a year for YouTube tutorials,” she commented.

Just like how students were left in the dark regarding the execution of their lectures, university authorities were frustrated by the government’s slow response towards confirming plans for the autumn intake. For instance, campus social distancing guidance is yet to be announced. This in turn affects the university’s final say on whether students can go back to campus, or continue with online and blended learning.

Data from The Observer showed that 17 universities were prepared for different scenarios, such as observing the one-metre social distancing rule during in-person lectures. This, however, would potentially reduce the capacity of lecture halls and rooms by a quarter. Eventually, universities might have to fall back to online learning from the lack of space caused by social distancing.

The vice-chancellor of York University, Charlie Jeffrey said: “The biggest thing is vaccination. That’s a precondition for universities operating as close to normal as we would wish them to. I’d like the government to see that as a priority, given the disruption university students have had to face. We’ve too often been an afterthought for the government, and students have felt that and are not happy about it.”

Hence, vice-chancellors from the Russell Group of research-intensive universities are prompting the government to establish temporary vaccination centres on university grounds when autumn term begins. They hope this move can prevent the same outbreak last year from happening. The previous outbreak had forced thousands of students into isolating themselves in small residence rooms. This led some of them to isolation fatigue, a situation in which students are anxious, depressed, or exhausted from staying in quarantine for too long.

The general secretary of London School of Economics’ student union, David Gordon predicted that requests for refunds would increase if the issue goes on for another year.

Gordon says, “I think students will put up with a bit of online learning.”

“But if students are barred from campuses, not getting in-person teaching or building connections with each other or faculty you could see an increase in calls for compensation,” he added.

With vaccines becoming increasingly available worldwide, there are high hopes that university students will be able to experience their campus life as usual again.

Reflections On Gen Z: Are They Really Stressed & Depressed?

Reflections On Gen Z: Are They Really Stressed & Depressed?

KUALA LUMPUR, 28.6.2021. What is Gen Z best known for?

Famously known as ‘Zoomers’, this generation was born into the era of technological advancement. While millennials slowly adapted to technology upon reaching adulthood, Gen Z had the privilege (or misfortune?) of growing up with the convenience of automation around them.

Just like their predecessors, Gen Z has their fair share of negative stereotypes. Some include having a short attention span, an unhealthy attachment to their phones, and a tendency to job-hop and ghost employers.

However, their technological expertise does merit them the title of ‘digital natives’ that is defined by their love of social media and all things digital. More often than not, they’re the ones acting as technology mentors in the workplace.

In fact, an article by Business Insider revealed that one of Gen Z’s favorite pastimes involved something that allowed them to make use of the technology around them.

Gen Z also possess strong beliefs about their ideals and convictions. According to an article from Ripplematch, 71% of Gen Z’s are willing to go as far as to boycott a company or organization that is behaving unethically.

They are also more likely to take a more progressive stance on social issues. With technology at their fingertips, they are able to keep an open mind and actively advocate for fair and equal treatment of minority groups such as LGBT, feminism, and Black rights.

Their reputation doesn’t stop there. They’ve also been labelled as the ‘lonely’ generation, the ‘pessimistic’ generation, and the ‘sad’ generation.

This can be due to the mental health challenges that they face, as long hours spent online can contribute to feelings of isolation and depression. Many of them also fall to the ‘comparison trap’ that social media presents, which increases the turbulence of their mental health.

In sight of current global issues, Gen Z do have quite a bit to be anxious about. The uncertainty of the pandemic, political conflict, and growing unrest surrounding issues such as gun control and police brutality can lead to increased levels of stress.

Nick Bradar, president of support group Wolverine Support Network, highlights this in his statement.

“I definitely struggle with it because social media does have harmful impacts, especially on teenagers’ and adolescents’ mental health,” he said. “But I am also well aware that social media isn’t the only thing causing people’s mental health to look differently in this generation.”

Nick’s struggle with mental health issues was prevalent in high school. By the time he entered college, he was actively looking for ways to support a positive mental state. Through Wolverine Support Network, he managed to not only help himself, but channel his passion to help other members with similar struggles.

While it is possible that Gen Z are more stressed and depressed than previous generations, another possibility is that they are simply more willing to share about their mental health. These issues have always existed in every generation, but our awareness of it today is what pushes us to treat it.

Hence, if there’s anything Gen Z has proven about themselves, it’s that they possess a tenacious resilience in the face of adversity.

By growing up in a period of political chaos and economic crisis, Gen Z has taken to mental health awareness like never before. They’re continuously fighting a battle against the existing stigma and encouraging others to do the same.

As a generation that isn’t afraid to speak up, they have the ability to change society’s mindset that seeking mental health help is a sign of strength rather than weakness.

Move Over, Make Up. Skincare Is Officially The New Thing Now

Move Over, Make Up. Skincare Is Officially The New Thing Now

Ngl, I don’t have the greatest looking skin.

I have large pores and get angry breakouts when it’s that time of the month. I tried wearing make-up before, but my sensitive skin was just not having it. After having multiple inflammations and irritated skin for days, I decided to focus on a good skincare routine instead.

First of all, let’s admit that having precious foundation smudged on our face masks is not the best feeling. I’m sure some of you even got maskne from it (acne caused by wearing face masks).

Girl in bathrobe doing skincare Image source: Unsplash

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against the idea of wearing make-up. But I personally believe that having healthy skin is more important. Besides, I could save more money by practicing minimalist make-up and investing more on my skin’s natural glow. In fact, I find more people on board the idea of embracing authenticity and naturalness

After researching and understanding my skin type, I developed my own daily and weekly skincare regime that gives me healthy, radiant skin. My steps are simple and don’t require too much budget and effort!

Daytime:

    1. Cleanse your skin with a gentle face wash.
    2. Tone your skin to balance its pH.
    3. Apply serum (optional).
    4. Apply eye cream (optional).
    5. Apply moisturizer. Use a lighter texture during daytime if you’re going to wear make-up.
    6.  Apply sunscreen. Never forget this step!

Nighttime:

    1. Cleanse. I personally use a mild make up remover first.
    2. Exfoliate if you are applying a mask. (Don’t over-exfoliate! I do this bi-weekly at most.)
    3. Tone your skin. This preps your skin for your masking session.
    4. Put on a mask of your choice for 20-30 minutes.
    5. Proceed with the rest of your routine.
    6. Seal all the goodness with a moisturizer!

I’ve been following this routine for a year. My breakouts aren’t as bad as before and I feel confident in my own skin now more than ever.

Here’s what I learned:

1) Skincare is Subjective

Just because it works on your favorite TikToker, it doesn’t mean that it works for you too!

For example, clay masks may be suitable for oily and combination skin, but that is not always the case for dry skin. It is important to understand what is best for your skin and what’s not. This could prevent a lot of unwanted skin troubles in the long run, which brings me to my next point..

2) Know Your Skin Type

Ask yourself: “What is my skin type?”

Before I learned about my sensitive and combination skin, I would buy any moisturizer thinking they were all the same. I ended up with even oilier skin after using the wrong moisturizer several times — big yikes!

There are gel, liquid/lotion, or cream, and each of them works best on a particular skin type. This applies to almost every product that you introduce into your skincare regime.

Here’s a general list of skin types:

  • Normal skin – Lucky you! Normal skin is neither too oily nor dry. A regular routine is sufficient for your skin.
  • Oily skin – Your skin generally has a porous, bright appearance. Gel moisturizer works best on this skin type.
  • Dry skin – Your skin feels tight and dry. In some cases, there may be itchiness, redness, and cracks on the skin. Cream moisturizers will help to retain skin moisture.
  • Combination skin – You have an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), and the skin on your cheeks is either normal or dry. Gel, cream, or liquid/lotion will work well on your skin.
  • Sensitive skin – This is a fragile skin type and may be paired with other skin types mentioned above. Irritations may occur in forms of tightness, itchiness, or redness. It’s best to use hypoallergenic and fragrance-free moisturizer.

3) Large Pores Runs In The Family

Here’s the thing: pore size is genetic.

I’ve tried countless remedies to make my large pores go away, but they irritated my sensitive skin even more. You can’t snap your large pores out of existence (sorry, there’s only one Thanos). However, you can minimize the appearance. One effective trick that I found is by washing your face with warm water and then rinsing with cold water. It’s an easy, cost-effective way to tighten up pores!

You can also opt for charcoal or clay masks. They can draw out impurities, leaving your pores clean and ready to take in serums and all the good stuff. Be careful though, as these masks are not for every skin type. (Refer point #1)

4) Exfoliate Before Applying Sheet Masks

If you exfoliate before using a sheet mask, give yourself a pat on your shoulder.

If you don’t, here’s why you should: Exfoliating removes dead skin and other impurities. It enhances absorption and makes it much easier for serum and key ingredients to penetrate deeper into your skin. It also leaves your skin bright and smooth, so there’s no reason for you to ignore this step!

Exfoliating is also known to prevent clogged pores, hence, reduces breakouts. You must always look for non-comedogenic ingredients in an exfoliator. Non-comedogenic simply means that a product is formulated to avoid clogging pores. These products are usually oil-free.

5) Never. Skip. Sunscreen.

Seriously, DON’T.

UV rays from the sun can cause wrinkles and age spots to appear on your skin, which are signs of premature skin aging. You should always wear a sunscreen even if it’s cloudy outside.

“But what if I’m indoors?” some of you may ask. Well, UV rays can penetrate through windows, so there’s no excuse!

Sunscreen is a vital part of skincare Image source: Unsplash

It is best to use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 and above. You should also avoid getting under the sun between 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and wear a hat that protects your face from the rays if yohave to be outdoors at that time.

6) Avoid These Habits

External care itself is insufficient for a healthy skin. What you put into your body counts too! Below are some habits that may cause your skincare efforts to go to waste:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking too little water
  • Eating too much dairy, sugary, and oily foods
  • Not taking in enough vitamins and Omega-3 foods

Self-Care Equals Self-Love

Skincare contributes to your self-love routine

To me, a skincare routine feels calming especially after a long day at work. I even find myself looking forward to it because it helps me unwind and relax, knowing that my skin is receiving all the attention it needs. It takes time to form the right regime as it requires trial and error, but the result is always worth your time.

If you are new to skincare, it may feel like a chore at first. Once you find a routine that works, your skin will thank you for this!

Gen-Z Gets Vocal About Climate Change

Gen-Z Gets Vocal About Climate Change

KUALA LUMPUR, 21.6.2021  After witnessing climate change and its effects on the world, a new generation of climate activists are taking matters into their hands to resolve the matter.

Generation Z or Gen-Z represents people born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, and are individuals who spent their childhood going through rapid climate change around the world.

Amnesty International Survey indicated that more than 10,000 Gen-Zs find climate change to be a crucial issue in this era. Additionally, a Future of Humanity survey discovered that 41% out of 10,000 Gen-Zs in 22 countries cited climate change as an important worldwide issue.

As a new generation of youth, they are vocal about their opinions, especially in climate change. They are actively playing their part to fix climate change and to make their future a better place to live in.

Rebecca Bromley-Trujillo (PhD), educator at Christopher Newport University who teaches political science and environmental policy says, “Older generations were not out there protesting in the streets on this issue the way Gen-Z is.”

Although climate-change activism has been around for decades, the involvement of youth is new. In fact, they challenge the norm by rejecting the idea that they are mere juniors with no say in adult movements.

Gen-Z’s concern about climate change are not just making their move via social media. These young climate activists walk the talk by forming movements and organizations, such as Fridays For Future and Zero Hour. Some went on hunger strikes and others have filed complaints and sued their state and the United Nations.

Instead of waiting for things to happen, Gen-Z has stepped up to help in climate change. A Washington Post-Kaiser survey showed 40% of high school students actively reducing their carbon footprint.

18-year-old Jerome Foster II is one such example. A college freshman from Washington D.C, he has started strikes in front of the White House to raise concerns about climate change and has played a huge role in organizing the 2019 Global Climate Strike that involved many people his age to speak up against climate change.

A report from the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated that there were 11 to 12 years before the climate system reaches a tipping point that leads to more disasters the scale of wildfires at Western US.

“We are racing against time,” said Jerome, while addressing the report.

“People keep saying our children’s children will see the consequences of climate change, but that was 50 years ago. We’re the children.” he added.

As Gen-Z will be new leaders of tomorrow, they are highly aware of how climate change could negatively impact their lives and future generations.

Nearly half of the world’s population is aged 24 or less, so there are high hopes that their voice will be able to persuade corporations, older leaders, and governments to take action to curb climate change.

Are Non-Degree Certifications Rising Above College Degrees?

Are Non-Degree Certifications Rising Above College Degrees?

KUALA LUMPUR, 17.6.2021 – The pandemic has brought a lot of uncertainty in the economy with rising levels of unemployment.

Amidst the crisis, non-degree credentials like Google’s certification programs are seeing an increase. To the unemployed, they offer a fast, affordable path for career advancement.

Working adults looking to upskill or switch careers can earn a certificate through Google’s new certification program, Grow with Google. It started out as a company initiative to create economic opportunity through free tools and training, but has grown to be an enticing alternative to a higher education degree.

Lisa Gevelber, founder of Grow with Google, stated that they first developed the Google IT Support Professional Certificate to create a pathway for talent looking to secure an entry-level job within 3-6 months.

“These certificates are intentionally rigorous because our goal is to make participants truly job ready. For instance, to complete the IT Support Certificate, you have to pass 150 assessments. Most people fail at least some of the assessments on their first try, so we help them refresh their knowledge of the content and encourage them to try again,” she stated.

Whilst some credentials require a few months of study, others can take a year or more to complete. However, these programs are generally shorter than most degree programs.

Hence, these short-term career training certifications are a practical choice for people who cannot afford to spend 2-4 years in school.

However, a big question that many job-seekers ask are: Will employers take my education seriously when they look at my credentials?

While the answer varies depending on industry, most employers often accept online credentials as it shows the initiative of the employee to upskill. The credentials also help employees to showcase the skills they’ve acquired through training.

According to a survey by Strada Education Network in 2019, they found that 60% of respondents with a certification believed that their credentials made them more valuable to potential employers, with a high likelihood of being recommended to vacant positions.

Additionally, research by the George Washington University reported that hiring managers will look at a resume closely if it shows reputable credential. Certain fields, such as human resource management gives certified applicants priority over others.

The enrolment manager of Austin’s Centre of Professional Education, Irfan, stated that part of the value of non-degree programs comes from how you showcase them.

“Employers increasingly are seeking candidates with specific skill sets who are ready to be productive on day one,” she said. “Certificate programs are built with significant input from industry experts and focus on those skill sets. We encourage students to list their certificates on their LinkedIn profiles and resumes to increase their marketability.”

While non-degree credentials are highly beneficial for entry-level job seekers and adults without a college degree, not all of them can lead to full-time employment. Some professional careers, such as Engineering and Accounting may still require a degree qualification.

Hence, it is advisable for job-seekers to do their research and review if the credential truly fits their professional goals.

How DevOps Is Transforming The Landscape Of Online Learning

How DevOps Is Transforming The Landscape Of Online Learning

KUALA LUMPUR, 16.6.2021 – Recently, DevOps has grown to be recognized for its potential in innovating higher education.

A combination of the terms ‘development’ and ‘operations’, DevOps signifies a collaboration between two departments to bridge the gap of the tasks performed by the development and IT teams in an organization.

This includes the process of automating and integrating the process so that the teams can work together for constant collaboration and improvement.

At its very core, DevOps is a philosophy that represents building trust and teamwork. While it does not function as a piece of technology by itself, it uses common methodologies, such as continuous integration, incident management systems, and collaboration platforms.

The DevOps lifecycle consists of 6 phases that represents the processes and tools needed for development. Below is a graphic highlighting each phase that is used to plan, build, operate, and monitor feedback through a continuous loop.

As DevOps has started to find a stable footing in the industry, academic institutions have begun to notice the benefits of DevOps in providing a platform for teaching. Not only has it proven useful to teach Computer Science, but the 6-phase lifecycle has extended into classrooms to teach students how to operate and manage through the configuring stages.

For example, students can create private projects where they give confidential feedback via comments under Continuous Feedback. The issues found are used to outline students’ individual assignments and submitted as their personal projects. Continuous Integration (CI) can be used to test code, fact-check, and grade test answers. Hence, each element of the DevOps lifecycle can be applied to the course structure, effectively streamlining the teaching and learning process.

GitLab’s education survey reported that more than 800 of its education program members have adopted the methodology into other academic disciplines, such as Engineering, Social Science, and Medical. This has allowed cross-campus collaboration between students, faculty, and IT professionals, solidifying the adoption of DevOps as an educational tool.

The increased collaboration is proving to be advantageous for virtual learning as institutions are moving to online courses. Students are also able to learn remotely without sacrificing the social aspect that makes the collaborative environment of a classroom.

The faculty have their share of benefits as well. DevOps allows them to assess and grade tests in real-time by running through the Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Deployment (CD) pipelines. Continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) are a set of operating principles that allow development teams to deliver code changes in a more frequent and reliable manner.

The data can then be used to generate reports to improve course design and student retention.

This can be seen through an article published by the University of Manchester stating how they used DevOps to “find patterns and evaluation metrics that can be used to improve the course content and reflect on the most common issues the students are facing.”

As such, the benefits of DevOps for both student and faculty are clear. As more universities are integrating DevOps into their education system, we can expect to see it expand and transform the landscape of higher education to new heights.
