Will Partnering With Student Recruitment Groups Increase University Enrollments?

KUALA LUMPUR, 16.6.2021 – Student recruitment groups may contribute to the increasing enrollments of university students despite the pandemic.

Covid-19 has greatly affected university student enrollments.

A study by the Institute of International Education, United States (US) revealed that the enrollment of international students plummeted by 43% in 2020. Although one in five students moved to online courses, about 40,000 of international students chose to postpone their plans.

With the uncertainty of the pandemic affecting the number of enrollments, higher education institutions are making their move to boost the number of students by seeking out student recruitment agencies.

A student recruitment agency aids educational institutions in managing the student admission process. Their roles vary depending on the agreement between the agency and university. The general services offered are; student consultation and counselling, application screening, managing their admission and Visa application process, helping them choose accommodation, and providing support throughout their studies.

According to an analysis about enrollment trends across higher education institutions in the US, partnerships with student recruitment groups could potentially increase the enrollments of international students.

Additionally, it is speculated that universities that collaborate with student recruitment groups are 1.73 times more likely to secure more international students.

As digital technology dominates communication and interaction among students, universities, and student recruitment agencies, the agencies are evolving their recruitment methods by utilizing digital marketing.

The precise targeting of digital marketing helps student recruitment agencies pinpoint prospective international students. The usage of social media, email marketing, websites, landing pages, and Google Ads is a promising method to enhance enrollment numbers by reaching a global audience.

Director of Academic Program Marketing at The New School, Laura Montgomery, says, “This is where the digital channel provides tailored content opportunities, which helps in connecting with students and enabling their choice by providing the right content at various stages of the process.”

“Specifically, digital marketing allows us to target our campaigns by country to improve international diversity and provide contextual information,” she added.

With more student recruitment agencies stepping up to assist higher education institutions around the world, there are hopes for student enrollment to increase even in a pandemic.

Lockdown In Malaysia Extended For Another Two Weeks

Lockdown In Malaysia Extended For Another Two Weeks

KUALA LUMPUR, 14.6.2021. The current Movement Control Order (MCO) has been extended from 14 June to 28 June.

It was announced in light of the rising number of daily COVID 19 cases, which are above 5,000.

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob stated that the SOP’s are still the same as the ones currently in force. He added that the decision to extend the lockdown was made by the Health Ministry after reporting a number of 6,849 cases on Friday, 11th June.

“The decision was made after taking into account the daily new cases that are still high and exceed 5,000 cases per day, with 6,871 cases reported yesterday,” Ismail said.

The number was recorded with a total of 646,411 cases and a record of 912 currently placed in intensive care units.

Malaysia’s lockdown was first announced on 28th May with a three-phase lockdown to curb the growing outbreak.

The first phase was supposed to last for 14 days, while the second phase would be implemented for four weeks after the first phase ended with the reopening of certain economic sectors that do not involve mass gatherings.

If the situation continues to improve, Malaysia will see an ease on the lockdown rules where most economic activities are allowed to operate according to SOP’s and health protocols.

However, social activities still remain banned.

The Future Of Higher Education: Empowering Women To Permeate STEM Fields

The Future Of Higher Education: Empowering Women To Permeate STEM Fields

KUALA LUMPUR, 14.6.2021 – As female representation becomes critically low in STEM fields, universities worldwide are encouraging women to specialize in a relevant field to improve these numbers.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. The STEM curriculum aims to educate students in the four elements using an interdisciplinary approach based on real-life applications rather than teaching them as individual fields.

A United Nations (UN) statistics has shown the dwindling number of female STEM students around the world which raised concerns among higher education institutions.

The number of female students enrolled in information and communication technology (ICT) around the world only makes up 3%. Approximately 5% of females major in mathematics and statistics, whereas engineering consists of 8% females.

Moreover, there are only 30% of female students in STEM-related fields and less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women, according to data from the UN Scientific Education and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Throughout history, women have left a significant impact in changing the world to be a better place. Some prominent female figures include Florence Nightingale (inventor of modern nursing), Radia Perlman (developer of an algorithm that made the Internet possible today), and Katherine Johnson (physicist, mathematician, and space scientist).

To ensure that women have their place in the STEM field like their predecessors, universities across the globe have amplified their efforts to encourage their enrollment into relevant courses.

Below are universities in the UK renowned for their top-ranked STEM programs:

University of Edinburgh – School of Informatics

The Computer Science course ranked 5th in the UK and 22nd in the world by 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Notable for its extensive programs that cover artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science, software engineering, and other subjects, the institution ensures students receive prime academic, adequate opportunities, and support.

Bangor University – School of Computer Science and Information Technology

The university has received prestigious accreditation from the British Computer Society and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. The school is also known for its teaching excellence, achieving the TEF Gold standard in 2017, and is placed in the Top 10 for student satisfaction. The school excels in research, with students getting to collaborate with mentors who are also professors and highly notable individuals in their majors.

University of Manchester – School of Engineering

The university focuses on developing ethical and sustainable improvements through research and teaching in science-based engineering. The departments in the school work closely with the School of Natural Sciences to further nurture engineering talents and future scientists to be innovative and creative. Professor Alice Larkin, head of the School of Engineering says, “We are proud to foster a sense of curiosity, creativity and innovation to address real world problems.”

University of Exeter – College of Engineering

The university is home to seven subject areas: computer science; engineering; geology; mathematics; mining and minerals engineering; physics and astronomy; and renewable energy. The research programs aim for sustainability and the betterment of the climate, with modules related to climate change, creating sustainable water supplies, imaging techniques to ease the treatment of brain disease, and many more.

With universities making the move to empower more women to join the force, we can hope to see more female students step up to make their mark in STEM fields in the future.

15 Malaysian Universities Listed In Asia University Rankings 2021

15 Malaysian Universities Listed In Asia University Rankings 2021

KUALA LUMPUR, 6.10.2021 – Malaysia has reached a record-breaker of 15 universities that have been qualified for the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2021.

Compared to last year, where only eight institutions made it to the list, five out of six of Malaysia’s top universities gained an improvement in their positions.

Universiti Utama Malaysia (UUM) advanced two bands into the Top 200 for the first time this year, a significant milestone from their placement last year.

Universiti Kuala Lumpur and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka also made their first achievement into the 400+ band.

Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) moved up 13 spots to 111th place, with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) maintaining its position at 119th. Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) climbed up nine places to reach 136th, with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) moving up ten places to finish at 150th respectively.

The deputy vice-chancellor of UKM, Prof Datuk Dr Abdul Wahab Mohammad, expressed his joy over the university’s placement into the Top 150. He stated it was the result of the efforts of all staff and students over the past two years.

“We restructured the research ecosystem within the university by putting more emphasis on multi-disciplinary research. This way, research becomes more prominent and more academics will start to focus on research,” he said.

Despite the challenges of the COVID 19 pandemic, Malaysian universities are rising in rankings and progressing well to adapt to the situation at hand.

Chief knowledge officer of Times Higher Education, Phil Baty, said that these rankings were an important measure of the strength of higher education across the continent.

“It is great to see a number of Malaysia’s universities improve or maintain their previous positions, despite the growing competitiveness across the region.

“It will be interesting to see what happens in Malaysia over the coming years and how universities adapt to the post-Covid world,” he added.

U.S. Universities Fall Behind In Latest QS World Rankings

U.S. Universities Fall Behind In Latest QS World Rankings

KUALA LUMPUR, 6.10.2021 – Several renowned U.S higher education institutions face a significant decrease in rankings in the 2022 QS Quancquarelli World University Rankings.

While the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) keeps the crown as the world’s best university, other prominent U.S. institutions did not perform as well.

For instance, Harvard University fell to its lowest rank ever with the fifth place. Additionally, American universities only made up less than half of the top 20 universities. This significant fall is backed by the statistics presented by Michael T. Nietzel, president emeritus of Missouri State University.

“Of the 177 American universities ranked by QS from 2022, 91 declined in rank (51.4%) while only 29 improved their position (16.4%) from a year ago.”

On the other hand, Asian and Australian universities are showing great improvement as they paved their way into the higher ranks of QS World Rankings.

On MIT’s ability to defend its spot for ten years, L. Rafael Reif, President of MIT commented: “We deeply appreciate the recognition of our institution and the faculty, staff, alumni, and students that make MIT what it is – and we also tremendously admire the achievements of academic institutions around the globe…We are proud and grateful to belong to this great human community of scholars, researchers and educators, striving together to make a better world.”

The remaining top universities after MIT are:

  • University of Oxford
  • Stanford University and University of Cambridge (Tied)
  • Harvard University
  • California Institute of Technology
  • Imperial College London
  • ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) and University College London (Tied)
  • University of Chicago

The QS Quancquarelli Symonds is a specialist in analyzing and ranking global higher education and academic programs. Ever since its establishment in 2004, the London-based company has since released 18 editions of rankings.

The future of U.S. higher education remains uncertain as the drop in rankings may raise concerns among potential international students planning to study there.

Why Sustainable Fashion Is Today’s Hot Pick

Why Sustainable Fashion Is Today's Hot Pick

Sustainable fashion is making headlines as the newest trend in fashion.

The fashion industry has been responsible for several environmental concerns, such as contributing to 10% of the world’s carbon emissions and 20% of the global industrial water pollution.

The fast fashion industry releases about 1.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide.

In response to that, the fashion industry is evolving to look for ways to remain stylish without compromising the environment. This includes ethical farming practices like sourcing organic cotton, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and ensuring the factory workers are paid fairly—all these factors affect the production process that goes into making fashion sustainable.

What is Sustainable Fashion?

In short, sustainable fashion is a movement that aims to create ethical clothing without harming the environment.

There are four main issues when it comes to environmental sustainability in fashion.

  • Waste creation: Once the garments are worn and used, they are thrown into the landfill, which accumulates and creates more trash as they pile up.
  • Water usage: Water is always in demand for agriculture and consumption, but the fresh water supply is starting to dwindle, due to our oceans and rivers becoming polluted.
  • Hazardous chemicals: Dangerous chemicals are emitted during the production process from creating dyes. These are not only harmful to the environment, but impacts the workers’ health as well.
  • Agriculture: The fibers used to produce the garment are often grown using pesticides and other harmful treatments that damage the natural environment and wildlife in the area.

Contributing To Sustainable Fashion

These days, sustainable fashion is all the hot topic when it comes to protecting the environment. But how many of us actually care, and how many are willing to take up the initiative?

Workers sorting out old clothes to reuse in an effort to make fashion sustainable.
Workers trying to sort out the excess fabric so that it can be re-cycled.

If you want to ensure that your wardrobe is as sustainable as possible, here are a few ways to start with.

1) Buy Less, But Better

Keep this mantra in your mind every time you’re out shopping and a brand-new white shirt catches your eye. Sure, it has a cool new print, but do you really need it? How different is it from the other dozen white shirts you have at home?

Before making a purchase, ask yourself these questions:

  • What are you buying and why?
  • Is this something you really need?
  • Are you going to wear this at least 30 times?

Committing yourself to buy less is the first step towards leading a sustainable wardrobe, but it’s worth it!

2) Shop Secondhand Or Thrift Shop

Step aside, fast fashion, thrift shopping is making a comeback!

Thrift shopping is ideal to create a trendy, easy-to-match outfit.

Pre-loved clothing can be just as fashionable if you know how to pair them right. The great thing about buying and wearing secondhand is that you can reduce the environmental impact of your wardrobe, plus give the clothes a second home!

Nothing beats the thrill of thrift shopping when you find a rare vintage item that is not only cheap, but looks great on you too! #thriftshoppingforthewin

3) Join A Clothes Swap

A clothes swap is a great way to give your pre-loved clothes a second home. It’s also a neat solution to avoid filling up the landfill with plastic waste.

You can either join a clothes swap event in your local community, or organize your own.  If you do plan on a private event, do remember to sort out the clothes by size, so you don’t end up bringing a size 7 shoe home by accident! (P.S. If that’s your size, more power to you!)

4) Donate Your Unwanted Clothes

You know that pile of old clothes sitting in the corner of your wardrobe, waiting for someone to come and rescue them?

Don’t abandon them, will you? Rather than leaving them to gather dust, donate them to a good cause that will help others to be more sustainable. A great way to do this is to have a one-in, one-out policy—each time you buy something, you give another one away!

5) Buy From Sustainable Fashion Brands

Maintaining an ethical wardrobe can also mean supporting fashion brands that use sustainable practices. Brands like PACT, Eileen Fisher, and Boden use eco-friendly practices to make their garments, such as sourcing for organic materials, recycling old fabric, and ensuring fair wages for their workers.

Sustainable fashion brands help to reduce the negative environmental impact.

While looking for sustainable fashion brands, it also helps to know the type of materials the brand uses and its impact on the environment. You’ll be more aware of how important your purchasing decisions are and ensure you buy from a brand that matches your beliefs. A good rule of thumb is to avoid synthetic materials like polyester and nylon, due to their harmful effects on the environment.

You can check out a list of more sustainable fashion brands here

Why Should I Care About Sustainable Fashion?

Here’s a little something you might’ve not known about the fashion industryIt’s one of the world’s biggest polluters of our oceans and rivers.

That’s right, the fashion industry is only second to oil in the pollution of industrial water pollution. 20% of the water pollution comes from the microfibers found in our clothing, which are tiny pieces of synthetic materials used to produce the garment. Companies opt to use these simply because they are cheaper and easier to produce.

When our clothes are washed, these microfibers tend to fall off.

They are washed down the drain, passed through our filtration plants, ending up in our oceans and rivers, and eaten by fish and other sea creatures. That’s where the real danger begins—because when the microfibers enter the food chain, we are at risk as well.

Sustainable fashion is an important issue that is garnering more attention to consumers.

Sustainability has become an increasingly important issue that more fashion brands and manufacturers are trying to incorporate in their values. Hence, the main responsibility of fashion companies lies in changing their production, distribution and marketing practices to include sustainable methods.

As consumers, it’s time we take a good, hard look at our purchasing behaviors and overall attitudes towards fashion.

Sustainable fashion doesn’t mean compromising your style. Just because this top isn’t in trend with the latest collection, doesn’t mean it won’t make a good outfit!

So go out there and show the world what it means to be fashionably sustainable!

Thrifting Clothes Is The New Fashion Trend

Thrifting Clothes Is The New Fashion Trend

Have you ever vibe-checked someone and thought:

“Omg, where did she get that cute vintage jacket?!”

Chances are, she had paid for it with half the price that you expect. How? Simply because she shopped at a thrift store. Let me tell you why thrifting clothes is such a huge thing now.

To begin with, thrift shopping or thrifting means shopping for items, usually clothes, at a garage sale, flea market, or thrift store. Most of the items are gently used or pre-loved, and often sold at discounted prices.

Simply put, thrifting clothes is a great way to give used clothes new life!

The Fun Of Unplanned Shopping

Thrifting clothes works best without a list.

Thrifting is all about the unexpected finds you can get from each store, which are usually filled with plenty of vintage, retro, and off-season goods. If you’re lucky enough, you can even find a perfectly seasoned leather jacket directly from the 80’s!

If you’re looking for an unconventional look that makes heads turn, thrifting clothes will surely do you justice. Nothing feels better than being able to creatively put together your own style with items you’ve carefully picked and curated to fit your look.

A Wallet-Friendly Alternative

So what if you’re a fashionista on a budget? No one’s here to judge!

Many would have frowned on the idea of purchasing secondhand clothes in the past. Now more than ever, scoring the perfect addition to your wardrobe from the thrift store feels more euphoric than buying a brand-new item from fast fashion brands.

When thrifting clothes, you will find plenty of beautiful pre-loved pieces at a fraction of its original price, or maybe less. Either way, thrifting clothes is a sure money-saver if you’re on a budget but still want to flaunt a unique look.

Some head-turning clothes you may find in a thrift store are:

Best Choice For A Fashion Glow-Up Experiment

Thrifting clothes is the best way to try different styles without overspending. As an impulsive buyer who loves fashion, I used to purchase clothes just because they look pretty. However, it’s a different story when I try them at home. I ended up hiding them in my closet, not wanting to picture myself in the poorly fit clothes again.

I was stuck in this vicious cycle for a few years. When I discovered the thrifting culture, I was surprised to find many rare items that are to my taste. The fact that they are no longer in-

season makes it even more exciting for someone like me who love expressing myself through my outfit.

Thrifted clothes are generally much cheaper than fast fashion brands, so it is a great way to work on your glow-up. You can try on multiple styles until you find ‘the one’ and not feel bad about burning a hole in your wallet.

Save Our Planet Through Sustainable Fashion

Did you know that the average consumer discards 34kg of clothing?

These clothes then contribute to global textile waste of up to 13 million tons. This is because the clothing supply chain produces excess waste in manufacturing that is often mismanaged.

Hence, thrifting clothes is one of the best sustainable choices to combat this. When you purchase pre-loved clothing, you’re not only extending the shelf life of these clothing, but you are also reducing the piling up of existing clothes in the landfill.

By thrifting, you’re practicing eco-friendly fashion, which helps reduce the demand for fast fashion by decreasing the need to produce billions of garments daily. Every contribution counts!

New To Thrifting?

If you’re a thrifting newbie, you might find it hard to locate a nice piece of clothing. In fact, I left my first thrift store with empty hands!

But don’t worry, it gets better with practice. It is best to start slow and spend some time going through each rack of clothes. Now, I can easily scan ‘potential’ clothes once I step in a thrift store.

Besides, I’ve met people who spend half a day at thrift stores as their hobby! Once you’re used to it, you’ll be able to snag that cute dress that fits your vibe perfectly, at a super low price. It only takes a little patience. *winks*

Thrift stores are always restocking, so their inventory is always changing. A trick to be strategic when you’re thrifting clothes is to come back every so often. Even better, befriend the staff and perhaps they’ll let you know each time they replenish their awesome goods!

Online Thrift Stores

If you’re not up for physical thrifting, there’s plenty of online thrift stores that you can easily find. Here are some of them:

Malaysian-based online thrift stores:

Upcycle Your Thrift

Snatches Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of tailoring to make your thrift shirt look truly unique.

You might find some clothes that you love, but aren’t available in your size. There are limited stocks after all. However, you can still buy them and give them a makeover. Upcycling is a good way to personalize your thrift fashion.

Be creative and pin or sew up sleeves, hems, or even cut the neckline to give an edgy vibe. Pair your ‘newly designed’ shirt with a leather jacket or flannel, and you’re good to go!

However, it is best to practice ethical upcycling if your intention of thrifting clothes is solely to scavenge and cut fabric. Instead of thrift shops, you can look into charity shops that have faulty clothes, such as broken zippers, missing buttons, and rips.

Here are some upcycling ideas to inspire the fashion designer in you:

There is no rule in fashion.

We live in a time where men can wear skirts and dresses (Hello, Harry Styles), and women can rock suits just like men. Fashion is one of the best ways to express yourself, so let’s flaunt our unique looks in an ethical, sustainable, and affordable way!

TikTok In Search For UK’s Next Great Entrepreneur

TikTok In Search For UK’s Next Great Entrepreneur

KUALA LUMPUR, 4.6.2021 – Dubbed the Dragon’s Den for Generation Z, TikTok is using its globally popular platform to scout potential entrepreneurs.

TikTok has partnered with investor and CEO of The Purposeful Project, Simon Squibb, to bring the contest to life. It has since gained more than 20 million views.

Squibb was driven to launch the competition after witnessing how the pandemic has created a generation of unemployed youth.

Launched on May 28, the contest calls out to aspiring entrepreneurs aged 18 and above to submit their business pitch. Using TikTok as their platform, applicants must submit a short video between 30 and 60 seconds with the hashtag #BeYourOwnBoss. The competition closes on June 30, and the winner will be announced on July 7.

The winner will receive:

  • £5,000 in prize money
  • A full year of mentoring from the competition’s judges
  • Free marketing on TikTok

The organizers believe that the positive growth of views reflects the people’s initiative to start their own business since Covid-19 hit.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the pandemic has caused a job loss in almost two-thirds of people aged under 25, and 74% have been unemployed for at least 6 months.

However, Squibb believes that there is a solution – by becoming one’s own boss.

“Don’t wait for a job, create one for yourself,” he said.

“I believe anyone can learn how to start and run a business – but you need to break free from the system that teaches you a job is safe and being an entrepreneur is risky, it’s the opposite. With the right mindset, training, tools and confidence anyone can be an entrepreneur.”

Squibb added: “With the #BeYourOwnBoss competition we’re encouraging the next generation of entrepreneurs to seize the moment and share their brilliant business idea so it can grow wings. What better place to do that than on TikTok, where there’s already a thriving community of creative young people sharing new ideas.”

With this competition, there are hopes of seeing more potential businesspeople rise and take the initiative to explore a new possibility in their career.

A New Job Site For Gen Z Is In The Works

A New Job Site For Gen Z Is In The Works

KUALA LUMPUR, 2.6.2021: TikTok is known for its short-form video format and is one of the most popular apps used by Generation Z.

The social networking service is currently in the phase of building a job site to help Gen Z look for jobs, according to Forbes.com. This new feature is still in the beta testing phase, so users will have to wait for official news before they can try it out.

However, it is highly anticipated that Gen Z job-seekers will be sending in video submissions instead of the traditional resume.

Various videos on career advice, job-search tips, and job interview tips already exist on the platform. The hashtag #careeradvice has already gained up to 80 million views per day since mid-February 2021.

This recruitment feature on TikTok is also expected to see companies producing short clips that highlight the company culture and employee perks to appeal to Gen Z.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, these young adults have been faced with some difficult times, including a financial crisis and spending a year of their young lives under lockdown.

According to ypulse.com, Gen Z spends around 6 hours a day on their favourite social media platforms. Instagram comes in first with TikTok in second, and Facebook placing third. Compared to Baby Boomers and Millennials, Gen Z seeks a job that gives them meaning and a sense of purpose.

This move by TikTok to create a Gen Z-catered job site is undoubtedly a smart one. With this platform, Gen Z will have a much easier time searching for jobs that align with their goals and values.
