Go Viral On TikTok 2021 With These Foolproof Strategies

Go Viral On TikTok 2021 With These Foolproof Strategies

So you’re here to go viral on TikTok, huh?

I don’t blame you. With the app taking over literally everyone’s phones — Boomers, Gen Z, doctors, celebrities, teachers, even moms! It’s hard not to acknowledge that this app has changed information into bite-sized videos that can entertain, inspire, and educate.

It may have started out as a casual lip-syncing app, but today it has evolved to a community where people can share a variety of content. From cooking tips, adorable cat videos, a day in the life of a sailor, or pro gameplay tips- anyone can post anything on the platform, and that’s a big part of what makes it so appealing.

Thanks to its wide popularity, it is not unheard of for the occasional youngster to wonder; “Can I possibly make it big as an influencer?”

Short answer: Yes and no. Long answer: It depends.

TikTok is a fast-paced app where you have to grab viewers’ attention within the first few seconds. Fail that, and your chance of going viral on TikTok is out of the window.

So here’s what you need to do..

Start Your Video With A Bang

If there’s no action in the first few seconds, people won’t bother to watch.

Set the tone of the video within the first few seconds so people immediately know what they’re watching. Using text is a great way to do this. Here’s an example below:

Video Link

Pro tip: Statistics have reported that people are more likely to watch a TikTok video if there’s a girl in it. Most popular TikTok influencers use this to their advantage by putting a girl in the first few seconds of the video before cutting straight to the topic. Sneaky, but it works!

Use Hit Songs

With all the catchy tunes and funny voiceovers, TikTok is a song-dominated platform. Content creators such as Keara ‘Keke’ Wilson posted a short choreography of her dancing to Megan Thee Stallion’s song ‘Savage’. It raked over 50 million views and became so popular as a dance challenge that even Megan Thee Stallion herself noticed! Even celebrities like Justin Bieber and Jennifer Lopez were grooving to the song and sharing their own versions.

Video Link

People freaking love popular songs. And once it hits viral potential, it only goes upwards from there.

The best part about songs is that you can use them for any kind of TikTok — it doesn’t have to be for choreographies alone. Use it as background music for a challenge, a comedy skit or a fashion showcase to show off your favorite outfit!

Keep Up With Trends

Viral trends on TikTok are plenty and they gain millions of views every day. Naturally, you want to hop on the bandwagon to increase your virality. You can either wait until you stumble on a new trend and do the same thing everyone is doing, or work smart and spot it early enough to be a trendsetter.

It does take up a lot of time to keep up with the ever-changing trends, but it’s a worthwhile sacrifice if you’re serious about going viral on TikTok.

Try using the Discover page to explore people’s interests. Take note of the type of videos that are gaining high engagement in comments and likes. The more comments a video has, the higher chances it will spark a new trend. Use this to inspire your own content and post it with your own creative twist!

Tell An Interesting Story

Wait, can stories even go viral? Aren’t they lengthy and like, pretty boring?

You have been misinformed, dear friend. Slick dance moves and a sick choreography might have a higher chance to go viral on TikTok, but let’s be real — not all of us are blessed by the gods of rhythm. So unless you’re a natural born dance-wonder, it’s up to you to cook up the mundane details of your life and turn it into a compelling story. Here’s an example:

Video Link

Include Small, But Noticeable Details

If I’ve learned anything from my time spent scrolling endlessly on TikTok, it’s that people love to comment about random things in the video. It can be anything — the dude who’s casually backflipping in the background, or your younger sibling who’s making funny faces in the corner.

Think of it as a mini-game with your viewers. By putting Easter Eggs in your videos, you’re actually rewarding viewers when they watch your TikToks and catch the reference. It’s an enjoyable pastime for them and an increase in engagement for you. A win-win situation for both!

Leave Them In Suspense

Ever heard of the quote ‘Leave them wanting more?’

Video Link

The trick is to post a video that will leave viewers with a burning question at the end — and purposefully not answer it. This will drive them crazy as they spam your video with comments demanding an explanation here and now. Remember, DO NOT ANSWER THEM.

The key is to get comments — as many of them as possible. Of course, you’re not baiting them — you’re simply waiting for the right time to go live, where you’ll answer it then.

Put On Your Controversial Cap

A wise man once said “One cannot go viral on TikTok without adding controversy to the mix.”

Kidding, I actually made that one up. But the truth is, people love controversy. And what better way to attract attention than to create some drama of your own?

Give your two cents on silly topics like whether pineapple on pizza should be illegal (I totally support this, btw) or if eating fries with ice cream is plain crazy. People can’t wait to jump in and give a piece of their mind in the comments!

At the end of the day, embrace your haters and love them- they’re the key to hitting virality. You should also try to steer away from sensitive topics like religion and politics. The purpose is to get more comments and engagement, not start a World War 4.

Manipulate The Algorithm

Another smart way to go viral on TikTok quickly is to manipulate the algorithm. TikTok categorizes the type of content you post before matching you with users who are interested in your content. Depending if the user has liked, commented, or shared a similar video previously, the algorithm will push your video out to them.

To break it down, if a user likes watching cat videos with a particular song track in the background and you so happen to make those, the algorithm will do the work for you and connect your videos to them.

Which is why it’s just as important to decide on a niche when you post. Stick to one category and don’t switch strategies too early- the algorithm might get confused about the type of content you’re going for.

To sum it up, going viral on TikTok is a numbers game. The more often you post content that is relatable to your audience, the more likely you are to go viral.

As you kick off your TikTok journey as an influencer, remember to be authentic, honest, and kind. Don’t be afraid to share your personal struggles and insecurities as it allows your viewers to relate with you and feel more connected to your content.

Authenticity is key to making it big on any social media platform. As you grow your followers and keep posting quality content, don’t forget your roots as an aspiring content creator. Support other creators and they will back you up as well. Who knows, in a time of Twitter wars and cancel culture, you might need them!

Mental Health Support As A Staple In Universities Worldwide

Mental Health Support As A Staple In Universities Worldwide

KUALA LUMPUR, 26.8.2021 – Universities and academic communities worldwide should provide mental health support to students as a means to help them cope with the losses and transitions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to World Health Organization, one in every four individuals will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives. With that being said, the student population should receive equal consideration as the pandemic continues to bring drastic changes to their learning experience.

160 countries implemented nationwide closures in May 2020, as reported by UNESCO. This move had impacted more than 70% of the global student population, which affected their performance in university and quality of life.

As in-classroom teaching is gradually replaced with virtual learning, university students lose their opportunity to socially integrate into the academic world with little to no chance to interact with peers, friends, and professors. Hence, this deteriorates their mental health as well as their academic performance in university.

Higher education providers play a huge role in providing the extra support that students need. One of the effective ways, as suggested by Times Higher Education is to identify at-risk students and offer the necessary support and help that they need through virtual counselling.

Furthermore, student councils in universities can provide peer support – a form of help given by individuals who have personally experienced mental health issues and recovery.

The method is gaining popularity as it offers greater empowerment and engagement, which helps troubled students address their mental health and well-being issues comfortably. Hilary Jacobs Hendel, psychotherapist and author of It’s Not Always Depression supports the idea of providing peer support.

“There is a lot of value in sharing with people who have overcome similar mental health challenges,’ she commented.

ICEF Monitor recommends that all faculties in the university have a number of staff trained in basic mental first aid for students. This will help lecturers and staff identify students who are potentially facing mental health issues, as well as determining the appropriate measures to support them.

Additionally, universities can provide resources on their website and social media platforms to raise awareness about students’ mental health, which can help students identify the symptoms and seek help before their condition worsens.

As the mental health and well-being of students become worrisome in this dire time, universities should play their role in ensuring that they can receive the help and support they need to make the best out of their student life.

“Do not take our right to education from us!” Afghan Students Demand Transfer As Taliban Advances

“Do not take our right to education from us!” Afghan Students Demand Transfer As Taliban Advances

KUALA LUMPUR, 19.8.2021 – Students of the war-torn Afghanistan are demanding to relocate to universities in safer provinces in an effort to continue their education. The Taliban’s deadly assaults on major cities left millions of civilians – and students – fearing for their lives and safety.

On 12 August, cities like Kandahar and Herat were taken over by Taliban forces. Lashkargah fell on Friday, and Fayzabad, Ghazni, and Taluqan followed suit.

When the capital city Kabul fell into their hands on 15 August, the Afghanistan President, Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

The fall of the Afghan government shattered students’ prospects of higher education as Taliban forces continue to cement their power on the helpless.

Afghanistan has never seen such a huge surge of girls who made it in higher education than in recent years.

However, the impending war delivered a major blow and studying became impossible – universities, schools, and other higher education institutions in many provinces and cities were shuttered due to threats of war.

As their last hope, many female students protested on the streets of Kabul.

“It was our hope and dream to stand side-by-side with our brothers to rebuild our country, help the children with education and become ‘angels of salvation’ for the sick and wounded,” Shagufta Amiri, a student in the Logar province, commented.

The students rallied in front of the Presidential Palace in Kabul’s green zone, demanding a relocation to higher education institutions away from the war, in the safer capital city. They also protested against the collapsing security situation.

Among the slogans chanted were: “Transfer is our right! Do not let the war close the gates of knowledge on us! Do not send us to war-torn areas! Do not make us victims of these wars! Do not take our right to education from us!”

Tahmina, a medical student at Khost University who joined the protest said, “All provinces have security problems, especially the provinces where we [protesting students] are. The provinces are far away, we cannot continue our studies there with peace of mind.”

Parents are also increasingly worried about their children’s safety and future.

“The security situation is not good and we cannot send our girls there,” a concerned mother of a protesting student from the Nangarhar province stressed.

When addressed on the issue, Hamed Obaidi, spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Higher Education said: “The doors of the Ministry of Higher Education are open to students and it is our duty to solve the students’ problems.”

“Therefore, our suggestion to the dear students is that the Ministry of Higher Education of Afghanistan is obliged to listen to the demands of the students and, as much as possible, in accordance with the laws and regulations, address their problems,” he added.

What Universities Can Do To Close The Skills Gap In Graduates

What Universities Can Do To Close The Skills Gap In Graduates

KUALA LUMPUR, 20.8.2021. Higher education institutions are facing pressure to keep up with the new demands of the workforce that are presently challenged by technological disruption, the evolving nature of jobs, and a radical shift to virtual learning.

Technology is quickly revolutionizing the traditional work environment, and colleges may not be changing quickly enough to meet the new demands. In a study posted by Dell Technologies, it stated that 85% of emerging jobs in 2030 do not exist yet, making it impossible for higher education institutions to prepare for them.

This creates a “skills gap” – a divide between graduate skills and employer expectations when it comes to in-demand soft skills at work.

According to the QS Global Skills Report 2019, some of the widest skills gaps faced by employers in modern graduates are problem-solving, resilience, and communication competency.

Clear communication skills play a large role in meeting expectations at work.

“Understanding the global skills gap involves identifying the trends that continually repeat themselves in different contexts worldwide,” the QS report stated. “Many employers identify the same valuable skills and skills shortages in graduates across industries and countries.”

The QS report also noted that graduates may be overlooking soft skill development, such as flexibility, negotiation, and resilience. This is a large contrast to employers who place a much higher priority on these skillsets, ranking them 4th and 5th in terms of value in the workplace.

Students are also likely to overestimate creativity, leadership and language skills, whilst employers rank them 13th and 14th respectively, placing them much lower than student expectations.

While there is a clear mismatch between the skills graduates consider important and employer expectations, it can be resolved by educating both institutions and students about the skills they should be cultivating to prepare for the workforce.

A change of mindset is also required from both sides. Students will need to equip themselves with the internal motivation to self-learn, while instructors and trainers should prepare themselves for the possibility of providing remote training. The focus should not only be on digesting information and presenting facts, but to emphasize the humane side of emotional support and empathy.

At the same time, subjects on arts and humanities are gaining recognition among employers for their strategic thinking and creative problem-solving skills that are essential in middle management roles.

This strengthens the importance of soft skills in academic programs and courses to drive up employment rates and secure a fulfilling career.

Hence, universities serious about helping their students bridge the skills gap should re-evaluate their current curriculum and take stock on the skills needed to prepare their graduates for the future of the workforce.

Best Netflix Shows 2021 To Watch On Your Summer Break

6 Best Netflix Shows To Watch On Your Summer Break

Excited for summer break?

Well, if you’re anything like me then you’ll find that it starts to lose its luster after a while. All we have left then is to fill the void with snacks and a good show. So without further ado, let’s get into the best Netflix shows to pass the time away this summer holiday!

1) Best Netflix Shows On A Pandemic: Sweet Tooth

Sweet Tooth is a Netflix Original series that was adapted from the comic book. It revolves around a post-apocalyptic world that is infected by a virus, causing a worldwide pandemic. (Sounds familiar, right?) The virus kills many and infects children, causing them to be born as “Hybrids”, somewhere between human and animal. People are terrified of the virus and heavily discriminate the young-borns, hunting them down to extinction. Amidst the chaos, a young Hybrid boy named Gus emerges from the woods and journeys to the outside world, trying to find his mother.

For an apocalyptic series, Sweet Tooth was surprisingly heartwarming. Unlike other apocalyptic shows, which force you to sit through episode after episode of suspense and dread, Sweet Tooth alleviates that with the occasional heart-melting moments between its characters. It makes for a pleasant watch and reminds us that, from the perspective of a cute 10-year-old, light exists even in the darkest of times.

2) The First Netflix Shows On Chess: The Queen’s Gambit

The Queen’s Gambit is one of the best Netflix shows that quickly rose to popularity when it first came out. Beth Harmon was orphaned at 9 when her mother died in a car crash. She was sent to live in a home in Kentucky, where she discovers her love and innate talent for chess. With the help of a janitor, she goes on to hone her talent, becoming a child prodigy and making her way up to win national tournaments and championships.

However, skill doesn’t come without a price. Beth’s slow descent into alcoholism and her struggle to break out of her addiction is one of the show’s greatest strengths. She refuses to let gender expectations deter her from becoming a world-renowned chess player, but it’s her own demons she struggles against that really makes the series worthwhile. During an intense tournament, the conflict on Beth’s face as she realizes she’s made a wrong move and struggles to not let her emotions show is what makes the series so intense and nail-biting.

The Queen’s Gambit promises you a compelling tale of a woman who is trying to prove herself as a capable chess player, regardless of gender. And that itself makes Beth Harmon a character to root for.

3) Top Netflix Show On Historical Drama: Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders is a crime drama that follows a gangster family set after the end of World War 1 in Birmingham, England. It is loosely based on the real Shelby crime family, who were infamous for their theft, violence, and total disregard for the law. That’s where the similarities end between real life and fiction, as the show focuses its narrative on ambitious and cunning gang leader Tommy Shelby, who makes decisions as head of the family to increase their criminal organization and maintain their stronghold in Birmingham.

Peaky Blinders is a show with an exceptional cast and excellent writing that takes you on a dive into the criminal underworld littered with violence, brutality, and organized crime. It successfully won several awards for Best Drama Series and Best Production Design, solidifying its spot as one of the best Netflix shows to binge on without regrets!

Disclaimer: Peaky Blinders contains graphic scenes of violence and murder, so it may not be the best choice for a family-friendly Netflix session.

4) Top Netflix Sci-Fi Collection: Love, Death, Robots

Love, Death, Robots is an animated sci-fi series on Netflix that uses a short story format to tell various stories. From supernatural creatures to aesthetic comedies, each episode brings something unique related to the three segments; Love, Death, and Robots.

Love, Death, Robots is a first rate Netflix show about robots and cyberpunk.

The show isn’t afraid to touch on issues like societal classes and war strife, which combines with creative storytelling to present a science fiction anthology that will keep you hooked through the night. Some exceptional entries are “Fish Night” and “Good Hunting”, which stand out for their bright, vibrant aesthetic and unique style of animation. Nearly all of the episodes involve robots of some kind, but the great thing is that the machines are so different and full of variety, that you won’t be bored even after binge-watching for hours.

More than just stunning animation, Love, Death, Robots does a great job at blending science fiction with other genres of horror, comedy, and romance. Plus, they recently released a second season, so sci-fi fans are in for a treat!

5) Best Netflix Original Dramedy: Bojack Horseman

Bojack Horseman is an adult cartoon comedy that is relatable, witty, dark, and tragic, all in one. The main character, Bojack Horseman, was the star of a hit television show titled ‘Horsin’ Around’ in the 80’s. Now he lives as a bitter, washed-up actor in Hollywood, California, washing down his regrets with alcohol and complaining about everything. He tries to make his way back into the limelight by taking on new acting projects, but his self-sabotaging tendencies are not going to make it as easy as he thought.

Witty yet dark, Bojack Horseman is not your typical sitcom where the show does nothing much than make fun of itself. Rather, Bojack Horseman is full of complex characters that deal with their own struggle of depression, addiction, and relationships in a world that closely mirrors real life itself.

6) Best Netflix Shows For Entertainment: The Umbrella Academy

One of the best Netflix shows that grew to be a crowd favourite is none other than The Umbrella Academy. Inspired by the comic series written by My Chemical Romance’s vocalist Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy introduces us to seven children that were born on the same day with mysterious powers. Raised by stern billionaire Reginald Hargreeves and a caretaking robot named Grace, the seven children are forged into a reluctant and somewhat dysfunctional superhero team called The Umbrella Academy.

The Umbrella Academy is one of the best Netflix shows to binge on for action, thriller, and suspense fans. Image credit: variety.com

They race against time to save the world from an impending apocalypse and time-travelling assassins. This forces them to put aside their differences and really work together to stop the world from imminent doom—because sibling bonds are all they’ve got, whether they like it or not.

The show has great themes of family drama and character development, which really shine when they’re fighting, either with each other or with someone else. It skillfully balances graphic violence with dark humour and emotional characterization—a rare treat, but a welcome one!

There you have it!

Time to bid adieu to the outside world for a while and curl up indoors with the best Netflix shows to make your holiday.

Dear Body, I Will Love You One Day – An Ode To My Body Image

Dear Body, I Will Love You One Day - An Ode To My Body Image

Look in the mirror. What do you see?

Chances are the imperfections: cellulites, stretch marks, scars, moles, freckles, body hair, gap teeth, and the list goes on.

To be honest – I used to hate my flaws.

I smiled with a closed mouth because I was conscious of my upper canine teeth, or yaeba as the Japanese call it.

I wore baggy clothes because my stomach rolls made me insecure.

I used makeup to cover the scars and moles on my face.

The efforts to cover my imperfections worked – but it was just a temporary bliss.

At the end of each day when I stare at my bare face and body, I felt awful all over again.

Body image is defined as the way we perceive our physical self and the thoughts and feelings that come with it – positive, negative, or both.

I’d lived with a negative body image throughout my teenage years, but something clicked when I grew older.

Other Women – And Men – Suffer From Negative Body Image Too

The statistics are staggering. Hold tight – we’re about to crunch some numbers:

91% of women are dissatisfied with their bodies. They turn to dieting to achieve the ‘perfect body shape’ which, as voted by 1,000 Americans, requires an average weight of 58 kg and a 26-inch waist on a 165-cm female. 40% of women are willing to have cosmetic surgeries to look better.

If you think that men don’t go through body image problems, these numbers will change your mind:

Over 20% of men considered going under the knife to alter their physical appearance.

Break Binge Eating estimated that 15% of young men belonging to the BMI 25 category admitted that they have engaged in several eating disorder behaviors such as skipping meals, vomiting, binge-eating, laxatives, fasting, and diuretics.

Let that sink in.

People are willing to go through extreme lengths to achieve the so-called perfection.

But what exactly is perfection, when all of us are born with different appearances, body shapes, and sizes?

I couldn’t find an answer to the burning question – but I reached a pivotal moment in my quest to overturn my negative body image.

My Body Was Never The Problem

I just couldn’t accept myself as I was.

The same goes to many individuals who spent years hating their own bodies because they look different.

How could we not feel any less than, when there are ridiculous beauty standards plastered on the front cover of beauty magazines, cosmetic stores, gyms, and boutiques?

Flawless skin, thin waist, and luscious hair; muscular hot-bod, sharp cheekbones, and chiseled jawline – come on, we’re not Barbie and Ken! 🙄

I’ll be honest with you: it is easier to hate your own body than to accept and love it as it is.

But when you work on self-acceptance, you will begin to look at your flaws as something uniquely yours.

Body image quote.

It wasn’t an easy road, but I learned to repair my relationship with my body.

And it felt so liberating to accept my body just the way it is.

So, how do we tackle this body image issue?

1)  Learn That We Have Different Definitions Of Beauty

Your flaws do not make you any less of a woman or man.

I grew up learning that to be beautiful is to have straight teeth. Imagine my surprise when I found out that having a fang-like appearance was actually a trend among Japanese girls! That definitely gave me a confidence boost – I now smile widely and unapologetically.

Unlearning the unrealistic beauty standards that you were fed with all your life does not happen overnight.

For starters, throw away the idea of beauty that was set by the society, media, or marketers. Appreciate someone else’s uniqueness instead of feeling inferior or superior about it.

Society's beauty standards should not define how we view body image.

We all have our differences, and that is okay. Remind yourself that no matter how you look, your body is still worthy.

2) You’re Only Given One Body – Learn To Love It

Learn to love the only flesh you’ll ever have.

More often than not, we dislike our bodies to a point where we detach ourselves and become focused on fixing the flaws. From extreme dieting to cosmetic surgeries, these are unhealthy methods and not to mention, brutal towards your one and only body.

It’s time to accept our bodies and be comfortable in them, no matter what they look like, and no matter what others comment about it. As Taylor Swift once said in her song: “just shake it off!”

Focus on keeping your body in good condition by eating healthy, getting enough exercise, and dressing it in clothes that make you feel confident. Once you start to feel comfortable in your own body, you’re halfway there!

3) Be Kind To Yourself

If you can’t bring yourself to say awful things to another person, then stop being mean to yourself!

Here’s something fun to do every morning: When you get out of bed, hug yourself or pat your shoulders and say something nice to yourself. Even better, thank it for being safe and well. Your body is one of the main reasons why you’re still standing and getting on your day. Show it some gratitude!

Spending a few minutes appreciating your looks can be a great confidence booster that keeps you in a good mood throughout the day.

4) Stop Comparing Yourself With Others

Repeat after me: This is not a competition!

We’re living in the social media age where we’re too used to comparing ourselves against the lives of those around us. From friends and family to celebrities *cough* the Kardashians *cough*, we are obsessed with having the same body as the ones we follow on Instagram or TikTok. But how sure are we that those images aren’t staged?

To have a positive body image is to stop the comparisons. Let go of the idea that there’s a specific look that every man and woman should have to look beautiful.

A male's perspective on body image.

Negative body image is a serious problem that not only affects women, but men as well. If left unbothered, it can bring about disastrous effects such as depression, eating disorders, and even self-harm. Don’t lose your genuine self for external beauty.

And hey, when you look in the mirror – tell yourself that you’re beautiful. 😊

Hot Girl Summer — What It Means To Celebrate And Why You Should!

What It Means To Celebrate A Hot Girl Summer - And Why You Should Too

When it comes to summer, there are two types of people; those who spend it hibernating till September, and those who choose to live in the moment.

If you’re part of the latter, you know it’s time for Hot Girl Summer to take the stage!

A term coined by American rapper and hip-hop music sensation, Megan Thee Stallion, she first released it as a song ‘Hot Girl Summer’ in September 2019, alongside Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign. However, none of them anticipated the huge blowout when it set the Internet ablaze with Twitter hashtags, Instagram captions, and TikTok parodies.

So what exactly is Hot Girl Summer?

Here’s a definition by the hot girl Megan herself in an interview with Root:

“It’s just basically about women and men being unapologetically themselves, having a good-ass time, hyping up your friends, doing you, and not giving a damn what nobody got to say about it. You have to be a person that can be the life of a party, and, y’know, just be a bad b*tch.”

The definition is vague, but carries a single objective—to normalize girls and women to be their authentic selves without the judgement or shame of their peers.

So, how exactly do we do that? Is there a rulebook we have to abide to? Do we look up to other ‘hot girls’ and live by their actions?

Truth is, there is no real guide to Hot Girl Summer. Experts dictate that HGS is defined by being single, but what if you are in a somewhat happy relationship? Do you pretend to ditch your partner for a day to live in the ‘hot girl’ moment?

To answer these burning questions, we’ve put together a guide that you can focus on to take your Hot Girl Summer vibes up to the next level.

1) Fitness OThe Mind & Body

During the 2020 lockdown, there was a pressure for men and women to undergo the ‘lockdown glow up’, placing unnecessary pressure on themselves to change their body. While it started out as a good notion, it turned toxic when people started using it as an excuse to pinpoint blame on other people, accusing them of being lazy when they were already going through difficult moments.

Today, Hot Girl Summer is all about embracing the person you are and loving your body, no matter the size. The best way to prepare is to work on your mind first. Ask yourself: When you look in the mirror each day, what do you see? We’re usually focused on our flaws, but this time, look at the parts you’re most proud of.

While it may not grant you a sexy butt or the instant gratification most of us crave, it does give life-changing results—a comfort in your body that is well-deserved, and rightfully celebrated.

2) Fashion Exclusive To Your Style

Hot girl summer fashion screams mini skirts and high heels, but that isn’t exactly everyone’s first choice.

Instead, embrace your own personal style with confidence and poise. The beauty of fashion is that no two people have the same style nor wear the same outfit in a day, and that is how it should be.

Wear what you are comfortable in! Hot Girl Summer doesn’t limit itself to one particular look, nor does it conform to fit traditional beauty standards. Women are constantly judged and criticized for dressing a certain way, but Hot Girl Summer is here to change that. Be it dresses or trousers, bold prints or crop tops, wear whatever brings out the best in you!

3) Practicing Self-Care

You probably knew this one was coming on the list, didn’t you? Because one can’t have a Hot Girl Summer if she isn’t feeling good about herself.

Be active doing the things you love. Try a new skincare routine, or get that spa bath you’ve been wanting. It can’t hurt to have a little workout session too. Start kicking your squats into high gear, so you can dance the night away when the time comes!

For a feel-good boost, work on your hair. The image of hot girl summer brings to mind voluminous thick hair that can withstand humidity of any sort, but of course real life isn’t that easy. Instead, opt for leave-in conditioner to keep your hair soft and silky. If you need some tunes to accompany your grooming session, check out this playlist for the best summer hits!

4) Adopt a HGS Mindset

Of all the pillars of the Hot Girl Summer world, having a healthy mindset is the most important.

Even with all the beauty products and fashion staples in your closet, those won’t bless you with the energy HGS represents. To truly embody the spirit, you need to start from within. Embrace the person you are, flaws and all, and work on building your confidence.

Shirley Thee Mustang, a huge fan of Stallion, described the ideal Hot Girl Summer as a way “to elevate your confidence and grow into a better version of yourself all while being happy.”

It’s all about owning your power, freedom, and being present for a good time. The best part is, HGS is seasonless. Single or taken, lockdown or not, Hot Girl Summer 2021 is for everyone. Because it’s more than just a term, phrase, or slang – it’s a lifestyle. The way you choose to spend your Hot Girl Summer isn’t defined by your relationship status, sexuality, body image, or zodiac sign.

It’s the magic you create for yourself that matters.

In the wise words of Megan herself, “It’s hot girl summer…but my man coming to pick me up after.”

My Anxiety Is Getting Worse, But Doing THIS Changed My Life

My Anxiety Is Getting Worse, But Doing THIS Changed My Life

Anxiety.

It’s a myth to some and a hidden catastrophe to most..or at least, to me.

I grew up in the shadow of a successful sister. My teachers compared us most of the time by saying things such as: “Why are you not as good as your sister? She scores well in Math, why couldn’t you? Your sister is better at this.”

The 13-Year-Old Me Grew Nervous

The constant comparison and fears of doing badly in exams led me to my anxiety. I only found out years later that I also suffered from test anxiety. With test anxiety, it is possible to feel stress or anxious despite being well-prepared for the exam.

My Anxiety Started When Exams Were Near

I was restless, tense, and having trouble concentrating. My worries increased and I had no way to stop myself from overthinking: What if I perform poorly this time? Will I forget what I studied? Am I doing good enough?

My hands trembled when I sat for exams. It got so bad one time that I had to excuse myself just to catch my breath and stop myself from breaking down. My sleep was affected badly – I woke up to most mornings with rapid heartbeat and cold sweat.

I spent most of my high school days overwhelmed by the internal turmoil that nobody could see.

When I went to university, I decided to help myself. I did something that I have never done before:

I Put Myself First

I moved forward with my own pace. I set goals to achieve and priorities to follow. I viewed mistakes as learning opportunities instead of failures. I accepted my shortcomings because I knew I was never meant to be like my sister. And most importantly, I learned to become who I was meant to be – myself.

Throughout my journey, I found several ways that keep my anxiety at bay:

1) Understand What Triggers Your Anxiety

The best way to conquer your anxiety is to know what causes it.

It could be family, school, and even relationships. Keep a journal to record when you’re feeling anxious or stressed. This helps you to look for a pattern of your anxiety triggers. For more convenience, you can always jot them down using a note application in your smartphone.

Examples of triggers can include caffeine, drinking alcohol, or even smoking. However, not all triggers are the same for every person. Some triggers may even stem from long-term issues, such as financial difficulties or a particular individual *cough cough* boyfriend/girlfriend issues?

The effort to locate your triggers takes some time, but it definitely helps in the long run.

Here are a few general triggers listed by Healthline:

  • a stressful study environment
  • genetics — anxiety could run in your family
  • withdrawal from certain medications or drugs
  • side effects of certain medications
  • trauma
  • phobia
  • some chronic pain or chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, or asthma
  • having another mental illness

As explained by Healthline: “When you do figure out your trigger, you should try to limit your exposure if you can. If you can’t limit it — like if it’s due to a stressful work environment that you can’t currently change — using other coping techniques may help.”

2) You Can’t Control Everything, And That’s Okay

If you are someone who frets over everything, it’s time to take a breather.

The truth is, you can’t control many things that happen in life. Worrying about something that you know you couldn’t prevent, such as natural disasters and diseases will keep your mind excessively occupied. Eventually, you will be wasting precious time and mental energy over something that you have no control over.

Sometimes, the only thing you can control is how you react. While you cannot control how the other person behaves, you have power over your attitude and reaction. When you control yourself instead of letting the situation control you, you will feel less overwhelmed and drained.

Over time, you’ll find yourself less affected. As the experts say, it’s just ‘water off a duck’s back.’

3) You Are Stronger Than You Think

Do you have plenty of ‘what ifs’ before you actually do something?

When self-doubt starts to creep in, try to identify your fears. What are you afraid will happen? Is it a devastating outcome? Or are you afraid that you couldn’t cope with disappointment?

The scenario that keeps repeating in your head like a broken record is usually not as catastrophic as you imagine. Don’t let self-doubt prevent you from achieving your fullest potential. And trust me, you are stronger than you think. You are capable of handling the worst-case scenario, and knowing this will motivate you to take better action.

4) Create Healthy Affirmations

We know too well that words can hurt. But in this case, words can heal us too.

We are often the harshest critics of our own self. My anxiety developed partially because I was too hard on myself. I was always nitpicking at the work I had done, when it was perfectly fine to others. It took a toll on me mentally, so I developed my own healthy ‘mantras’ that keep me going even until today.

Whenever I catch myself feeling anxious over something I have no control over, I say “I am strong enough to handle it” or “This too shall pass”. They remind me not to waste my time and effort on things I cannot change. It will all soon be in the past anyway!

5) You Need Adequate Sleep

The Sleep Foundation recommends 7 to 9 hours of sleep for young adults and adults.

But let’s be honest: When was the last time you actually slept well at all?

When anxiety kicks in, your body may experience muscle tension, headaches, and even insomnia. According to Medical News Today, a sleepless night can cause anxiety to shoot up to 30%. Yikes!

Getting enough deep sleep protects against anxiety. Eti Ben Simon, postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Human Sleep Science at UC Berkeley mentions that “Deep sleep had restored the brain’s prefrontal mechanism that regulates our emotions, lowering emotional and physiological reactivity and preventing the escalation of anxiety.”

The most important rule to sleep better is to stop using electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime. Instead, reading a book helps you fall asleep faster and it makes you feel great the next day. Time to blow the dust off your books and start reading! If reading is not your favorite pastime, here are some tested and trusted tricks that I use:

  • Listen to the sounds of nature. The sound of waves is my personal favorite!
  • Take a warm shower before bed.
  • Drink chamomile tea – it’s a natural sleep inducer and helps to reduce anxiety.
  • Visualize yourself in a tranquil environment. Waterfalls always work for me.

Lastly, be kind to yourself. It’s easy to let the words of others get into your mind – expectations, judgments, unsolicited advice – you don’t have to let them in. You’re in control after all. 😉

Cheating In Online Learning: Beneficial To Pass Or Harmful To The System?

Cheating In Online Learning: Beneficial To Pass Or Harmful To The System?

KUALA LUMPUR, 12.8.2021 – The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many to undergo the shift to remote learning for both students and schools. At one point, technology proved to be useful opportunities for virtual learning to continue classes despite being confined to our homes.

However, as online learning started to become the norm, student cheating has seen a rise as well.

From April to August 2020, a study from Imperial College London found an increase of nearly 200% in the questions and answers that were posted on a student learning platform, Chegg, Inc. Known as a student-first learning platform, it was found that Chegg’s homework help section was up over 196% from the same period in 2019.

The study concluded that the increase in student cheating correlated to the shift to online learning and misuse of educational tools like Chegg.

Another report by Texas A&M University stated that they found more than 800 cases of academic fraud after a faculty member noticed that students were finishing complex tests in less than a minute. Some of the information were coming from Chegg, a university representative said. In a separate case, Boston University also reported several students using the site to cheat.

While websites like Chegg aren’t designed for cheating, they do offer a platform for it.

When asked about cheating, many students mentioned that they were just looking to pass the course, and only intended to do so in the short term. They also cited difficulties in online education that affected their ability to retain information, such as asking questions during class. Students can ask questions through email, but miss the ease of a direct explanation they have from raising a hand in class.

Andrew Labit, a freshman from the University of Missouri, stated that he has been struggling to learn in this new environment.

“Unlike in-person classes where you have to show your work and actually learn something, online is just to “get to the answer,” he said. “That’s where a lot of our mentality went to, just trying to get the right answer.”

To combat cheating, many education institutions have taken to using a proctoring system to monitor student activity in an exam. Students are asked to show their identification and workspace while their audio and video are recorded. The program can also track eye movement during exams and prevent users from opening new tabs.

However, even with a camera on the other side, students still find ways to cheat around the system. Some place a phone on their desk after the workplace check, while others write notes on their arms. These aren’t an obvious problem when students don’t have to show their work.

Although student cheating is a bigger problem than ever, universities still maintain their integrity as an educational institution to hold students accountable to their actions, whether they admit it or not.

A representative from McGill University, Canada, said in an email statement that some students have already faced disciplinary action for plagiarism and cheating. Students that are suspected of misconduct are summoned for a disciplinary interview. Based on the evidence gathered, they can either face probation, a grade penalty, or a failing grade for the entire course.

For many, it is not that COVID-19 has increased cheating, but rather that students are getting caught easier, as stated by Tricia Bertram Gallant, the director of academic affairs at University of California, San Diego.

“Cheating is cheating,” she added. “It hasn’t really changed in a hundred years. People have always cheated by going to sources that they weren’t supposed to go to.”
