KUALA LUMPUR, 24.11.2021 – There is a wide belief that studying abroad is the gateway to better overseas jobs with higher pay. The aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic had pressured many to seek financial stability and secure emergency funds, and one sure way of doing so is to pursue an education abroad.

Some best global universities started as a branch campus experiment intended for one purpose: to cater to the interests of international students.

Now, they have grown into multi-campus entities that offer various programs around the globe with a noticeable presence across countries and continents.

Global universities have two main goals: solidify the education system; and build a stronger foundation for the international community, especially in the current global dynamic.

New York University (United States) and ESCP Business School (Europe) are known for their global presence and successful programs.

Other larger US-based universities, although lesser-known than the best global universities, also offered innovative and forward-thinking postgraduate degrees and specialized leadership programs aside from their undergraduate degree programs.

An example of a leading global presence strategy is Curtin University. The Australia-founded global university goes by a prospect that ensured each campus “do research, teach, and engage with their communities and global issues”. This strategy provided students with comparable experiences wherever they study, which helped them shape a global perspective with a better cross-cultural understanding.

Deputy vice-chancellor, Professor Seth Kunin, commented that “one of the strengths of the Curtin model is that each campus created their own online material aimed at their own students.”

As a result, students felt appreciated and heard as their home faculty took the effort to produce customized materials after recognizing their preferences and pace in learning.

Some of the best global universities established an official institutional perspective across campuses. This integrated a shared vision among the community of students and alumni around the world that promoted the quality of student experience and academic delivery.

The integration benefited students the most as they could participate in international programs from their home country, breaking the barriers of travel bans and mobility concerns during the Covid-19 pandemic.

ESCP Business School, for instance, practiced a rotation system: programs with a similar academic content are approached differently in each location. For example, critical thinking (Paris), theoretical-based (Berlin), gamification (London), humanistic (Turin), blended (Madrid), and contextualization (Warsaw).

A high level of diversity on each campus also allowed students to move fluidly between cultures and adapt to a complex multicultural environment.

Despite the promising success and advantages of the global university model, it is still a rather new concept that is yet to be implemented in higher education institutions around the world. Naturally, challenges will rise.

Global universities must first obtain local and international credibility for each campus in order to gain in-country accreditation and to be a legal entity in each location.

As local laws differ in each region, the accreditation details may vary depending on the educational framework and focus of the institution.

As confirmed by executive vice-president and dean for academic affairs and international relations at ESCP Europe, Professor Leon Laulusa, “The main challenges lie in coordination and harmonization at both a federal and local level and the need to comply with pedagogical rules and legal requirements that differ from country to country. The key to tackling these challenges is a hybrid governance, federally and locally.”

Students may also feel isolated at a foreign-built campus. It will be challenging for a foreign entity to accurately integrate local cultural concepts to encourage interaction between students and the local community.

Lastly, a strong leadership from both local and foreign campuses must be present to ensure the effectiveness of a shared vision.

With more global universities expected to rise in the next decade, studying abroad will be a common concept among students and parents looking for a better quality of education.

DePaul: Study Abroad Officially Back On Track, Student Safety #1 Priority

KUALA LUMPUR, 10.11.2021 – DePaul is resuming in-person study abroad after an entire year of cancellation and postponement in an effort to maintain student safety due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

DePaul University, Chicago expected trips to continue internationally despite the pandemic. With student safety as their priority, having Covid-19 vaccination is now a compulsory.

The university is reopening more programs although there are still many uncertainties regarding Covid-19. For instance, applications are now open for students who plan to study in Asia, Europe, and Latin America.

According to an August update from DePaul’s own student newspaper, “While there continues to be uncertainty regarding the pandemic, we are moving forward with planning for a limited number of both term-long and short-term study abroad programs.”

There will be strict procedures to be complied to ensure student safety. For example, students must be fully vaccinated and show proof of a negative Covid-19 test and purchase of a Covid-19 test.

This step, however, can take a toll on students’ budget.

Angelina Davila, a junior of DePaul studying in the UK had to use her own money to pay for her Covid-19 test before she could travel for study purposes again.

As the UK has particular requirements for students entering from the US, travelers have to take extra precautions to ensure they are allowed entry. Furthermore, the US is ranked amber by the UK due to their alarming rate of Covid-19 cases. The US had over 46 million cumulative cases as of November 8.

“Different airlines had different Covid-19 guidelines so I had to make sure I did all my research on Covid-19 guidelines for my airline, Iceland Air,” Davina said.

She added: “In order to get into the UK, I needed to fill out a passenger locator form, have a negative Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours of my trip, and pre-purchase a Covid-19 test from a UK company called BIOGRAD to take on my second day. I had to print proof that I did all this and once I got to check-in for my flight, I was asked to show these documents.”

The test costed Davila £90, which was a hefty sum for a university student living abroad.

As of November 4, Covid-19 cases in the UK were also spiking. Over the past week, cases in England’s cities have increased from 469 to 491 per 100,000.

Another DePaul junior, Rachel Miller who is also studying in the UK, tried not to put too much emphasis on the recent spike.

“I haven’t followed the numbers because it overwhelms me too much. If I got Covid-19 in London I would get treated better and faster (than in the US) though,” Miller said.

Davila, on the other hand, found the pandemic in the UK close to ‘nonexistent’, as “People here do seem to think that the UK government is handling the Covid situation quite well currently.”

“Despite the recent spike in cases here, many locals say that it’s not reflective in hospitals which is likely because so many people are vaccinated and don’t show severe symptoms the way they would pre-vaccination,” she explained.

Take-home self-tests are now largely available in the UK, while the US has kits that are approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to be used before any international travels.

Although the severity of Covid-19 may have dampened due to the rising availability of vaccines, student safety still remains as a main concern for many universities. Students are advised to take precautions and comply to SOPs if they’re studying abroad.

If you’re not so much of a people person and prefer working by yourself, you can check out the IT Support department for job openings. They usually have positions that require you to work when a technical request or emergency comes in, so you won’t be occupied all the time.

All US universities offer technical support to classrooms, laboratories, and event halls, so it’s a pretty important job. Some of the duties include providing tech support for conferences, classrooms, handling repair work, and maintenance for technical equipment, such as printers and desktops.

Did I mention that if you’re studying in an IT field, this is a great way to grow your computer skills?

Study Abroad Remains Popular Despite Safer Online Learning Option

KUALA LUMPUR, 1.11.2021 – The implementation of online learning due to Covid-19 did little to no effect on students’ interest in studying abroad and having on-campus experience in a foreign country, based on a New Horizons global survey.

Out of 3,650 students from 55 countries, 79% of them considered studying abroad, despite being safer from the Covid-19 virus if their studies were conducted online.

18% of students chose to begin their studies online in their home country before continuing their in-class learning in the overseas campus.

On the other hand, 10% preferred a full online learning program with an international university, while the remaining students chose to have in-person classes at a local university that was partnering with an overseas institution.

An overseas degree is still considered one of the best means to ease graduates’ migration to their host country, with 63% of respondents planning to use their qualification for said reason.

Moreover, 65% of students expressed interest in gaining working rights in the country of their university.

To encourage more international student placements, popular study abroad countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada could come up with a plan that fulfills students’ long-term desires which also covers immigration policies, residency, post-study work rights, and more.

As students’ main motivation to study abroad is to expand their future career prospects, countries looking to maintain or expand their overseas student markets should devise a new plan that could fulfill these desires.
