KUALA LUMPUR, 24.5.2021 – The Canadian borders are allowing international students entry into the country under the condition that they attend an institution with a COVID-19 readiness plan.
As of October 2020, the Canadian borders have reopened to give way for international students to pursue their studies, announced the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Marco Mendicino.
In order to commence their studies, international students must attend a designated learning institution (DLI), or a school that is approved by the Government to accept international students.
The DLIs must have a COVID-19 readiness plan that:
International students must observe a 14-day self-isolation prior to their entry and present proof of a negative COVID-19 test.
Additionally, they are required to take another test upon arrival, as well as undergoing quarantine in a government-approved hotel for three days while waiting for the results.
International students are required to apply for a study permit. According to Canada.ca, students who have submitted their applications by May 15, 2021 will receive their results by August 6, 2021, which aligns with admissions for the fall semester.
However, the Government does not guarantee that students who apply after the submission date will receive a final decision before fall semester commences.

As the Canadian Federal Government has allowed international students to enter despite strict border restrictions, universities are also diligently supporting students until further clarification regarding the status of international students are made.
“Canada’s universities respect the importance of the Government of Canada’s measures in protecting the health and safety of Canadians and are working closely with our member universities to understand the impacts of these measures,” Cindy McIntyre explained, assistant director of international relations at Universities Canada.
Meanwhile, students are encouraged to stay at home for their online classes and practice social distancing measures on campus.
