Lockdown In Malaysia Extended For Another Two Weeks

KUALA LUMPUR, 14.6.2021. The current Movement Control Order (MCO) has been extended from 14 June to 28 June.  

It was announced in light of the rising number of daily COVID 19 cases, which are above 5,000. 

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob stated that the SOP’s are still the same as the ones currently in force. He added that the decision to extend the lockdown was made by the Health Ministry after reporting a number of 6,849 cases on Friday, 11th June. 

“The decision was made after taking into account the daily new cases that are still high and exceed 5,000 cases per day, with 6,871 cases reported yesterday,” Ismail said. 

The number was recorded with a total of 646,411 cases and a record of 912 currently placed in intensive care units.  

Malaysia’s lockdown was first announced on 28th May with a three-phase lockdown to curb the growing outbreak. 

The first phase was supposed to last for 14 days, while the second phase would be implemented for four weeks after the first phase ended with the reopening of certain economic sectors that do not involve mass gatherings. 

If the situation continues to improve, Malaysia will see an ease on the lockdown rules where most economic activities are allowed to operate according to SOP’s and health protocols.  

However, social activities still remain banned.
