KUALA LUMPUR, 3.9.2021 – Higher education providers in America are increasingly confident about the recovery of international students and study abroad enrolment.

Enrolment is expected to recover in phases following the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic that brought major changes to student experience in universities and colleges.
A COVID-19 Snapshot Survey released by the Institute of International Education (IIE) found that American institutions are beginning to focus on bringing students back to campus. They do not intend to offer virtual classes only, and 86% of universities are already planning in-person study in fall 2021.
Moreover, the survey found that international student applications for the 2021-22 academic year have nearly doubled compared to the application record that was reported by institutions a year ago.
Hence, up to 90% of universities are planning to offer in-person study to international students as well.
In light of the universities’ optimism regarding the return of their students, Mirka Martel, head of research, evaluation, and learning of IIE said:
“Universities are prepping for a strong recovery in international education enrolment as they emerge from the pandemic.”
“We anticipate the recovery to come in phases, tied to vaccinations and travel guidelines. But there is definitely a concerted effort by US higher education institutions to re-open their campuses and encourage all students, including international students, to return to in-person study.”
Universities are now actively reaching out to students to get them to enroll and their main priority is to have more international students onboard, with up to 77% of institutions funding recruitment of international students using various methods: online recruitment, social media, and collaborating with current international students on other campuses.
Following their effort to recruit students from all around the world, 64% of universities are planning to provide vaccines to students, faculty, and staff on campus.
On the other hand, less than half (45%) do not require a vaccine prior to students’ arrival on campus.
Meanwhile, some institutions choose to remain cautious with their recruitment approach and deciding about future terms due to the uncertainty that a Covid-19 outbreak could bring.
