Struggling in College Post-Pandemic? 6 Tips to Get Back on Track

There she goes again!

Your mum is babbling at you for not washing your dishes. Your authoritarian lecturer who keeps spamming you with assignments and your goofy friends are asking you in the Discord chat to go out and “Touch grass, bro.”

The pandemic has drained us to the core. You were enjoying the mundane tasks at home; jogging, eating, making Tiktok lettuce chips, and listening to podcasts. Then the next thing you know, your 9pm online class actually starts at 9am. You can’t even wake up with 6 different alarms on for all you care.

However, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.

You don’t have the power to completely erase Covid-19 (trust me, we don’t either) but one thing is for certain, is that you have the power to turn your life around by making the right choices.

So, get your shoes ready and warm up. We’re about to do some cardio!

Here are 6 tips for you to get back on track.

1) Set Reasonable Goals

Setting big goals is so overrated. It’s time to focus on the details.

You don’t want to be overwhelmed by your goals. Instead of setting a monumental, ambitious achievement like finishing your final-year project within 3 days, break it down to smaller tasks. For example, finishing your first draft by the end of the day, and spending another day on proofreading and revisions.

Focusing on the smaller, doable tasks can help lessen your anxiety.

You may want to start small by filling in the blanks task for your English assignment, read a history book, go for a jog, and clean your room. Jot that down on your journal.

When making goals, fellow strugglers often made the rookie mistake of setting it really big and complex. You are digging your own grave before you can get back on track, my friend.

Take small steps. Baby steps.

2) Get a Good Support System

Supportive circle will push you to do your best to get back on track.

Isn’t it stressful to constantly be watched and pressured by others because you’re not doing enough?

Ditch that circle, or at the very least, ignore them. They are not helping you grow.

Instead, surround yourself with people who actually care about you and want to see you flourish in life. You don’t need a handful of them, just a good few people would do.

Try joining a community at your neighborhood. If you’re socially awkward, hey, like-minded souls await you at online platforms like Reddit and YouTube! It’s a wholesome community when everyone bands together to share their struggles and form solutions to overcome it. Internet friends are the new #squadgoals.

Remember you are not alone, pal. We’re all in this together.

3) Find Your Mojo

Have you ever worked on something and felt like it’s not vibing with you?

Take Batman for example. As a lone wolf, he prefers working at night because the atmosphere is calmer, not to forget it’s easier to sneak away undetected when the cops arrive. A silent night matches the brooding vigilante, don’t you think?

Similarly, you may feel that it’s easier to work at night because there’s less people to disrupt your concentration. But when morning arrives, it takes forever for you to wake up, and you feel even more tired than the night before.

Sound familiar?

Yet you still force yourself to work in the daylight because society tells you “The early bird gets the worm.” It doesn’t help that procrastination is a huge demotivator. Ugh!

Figure out what works for you and change the habits that are slowing you down. According to research, it takes around 18 to 253 days to change bad habits until it’s on autopilot.

When you think about it, 253 can pass in just a blink of an eye. Your best bet is to be consistent and firm with habits that will help you get back on track.

It’s not an easy feat but you will get there, progress is not linear.

4) Learn New Things and Upskill

Routines can make you feel stuck.

Add some spice by learning new things!

Discover new skateboard tricks, create a sustaining art craft, learn a foreign language or watch coding vids on YouTube. Learning these skills will definitely be beneficial to you in future.

Furthermore, trying new things forces your brain to think as it is being put into a unique situation that will eventually be translated into other parts of your life. You will start seeing things from a different lens.

Keeping yourself occupied with new things to learn will foster uplifting emotions that motivate you to get back on track. After all, an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.

5) Health is Wealth

Staying healthy is an uphill battle, especially when you are forced to stay home.

You’re prone to binge eating and you’re not getting a hot Jason Momoa bod by being a couch potato the whole week, because you are absolutely drained from the agonizing confinement.

Okay, so you don’t need to have a hot bod. But having a healthy body, mind and soul can help you get back on track feeling fresh.

Start by exercising few times a week and eating healthy. On average, your exercise should last 30-minutes a day to stay healthy. You can try cardio activities such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming and cycling.

In addition to that, incorporate more greens in your meal. You can follow the 3-2-1 method to get every nutrition in moderation. Balance is key!

Having a great health enables you to get back on track and do your tasks efficiently. So, start eating your veggies, buddy.

6) Take it EZ on Yourself and Others

Life can be very harsh on us. No matter how much you’ve done, it never feels enough.

You’ve set your goals, have a great friend circle, found your mojo, and am constantly learning lots of new stuff while staying healthy. Yet, there’s a void you can’t fill.

Every day, you push yourself to be the best version, but as soon as you see someone more accomplished (an influencer on your IG feed, perhaps) you start to compare your achievements and end up hating yourself.
