Civil Engineering is one of the engineering disciplines aside from the main branches of mechanical, electrical, and chemical.
Civil engineering deals with construction, design, operation and maintenance of all built environments. This includes major infrastructure like highways, bridges, tunnels, water systems, dams, railroads and airports. A profession that has helped greatly in increasing knowledge on how to build and create an environment that is both safe and convenient to live in, civil engineers are essential in the progression of society.
The Pyramid of Giza, Eiffel Tower, Stonehenge and Taj Mahal are some examples that stand tall and strong as monuments of human civilization and urbanization. These achievements would not have been possible without the hard work of many civil engineers today.
As society continues to develop with the evolvement of technology, civil engineers will be high in demand for the creation and merging of various infrastructures.
Civil engineering consists of a wide spectrum of sub-disciplines. You can choose to specialize in the following branches:
Construction Engineering: Deals with the planning and construction of a building. A construction project involves coordinating contracts, overseeing the transportation of materials to the site, and checking the logistical operations.
Structural Engineering: Involves the study and analysis of structures like bridges, flyovers, and buildings. These engineers are responsible for creating safe, durable buildings that can endure environmental factors such as earthquakes, floods and strong winds.
Geotechnical Engineering: Analyzes the rock and soil of an area to ensure the ground is stable enough to withstand a construction in the future.
Transportation Engineering: Deals with the planning, construction and maintenance of transportation systems such as roads, bridges, railways and airports. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion and minimize the risk of accidents happening.
Water Resource Engineering: Involves the design and construction of systems that collect and distribute water as a natural resource. Water resource engineers focus on wastewater procedures and water filtration to improve the quality of water resources in a neighbourhood.
Environmental Engineering: Involves creating ways to solve environmental problems and conserve the natural environment. These engineers are responsible for solid waste management improving the quality of the air, and creating sustainable options to environmental issues.
