The field of Health and Medicine is about the prevention and measures taken to cure diseases and keep the physical and mental well-being of a patient.
Health and medicine are important to society because of how it helps save lives. Without our nurses and doctors, people would be vulnerable to numerous health conditions without anyone to treat them. Especially during the time of a pandemic, health professionals are more in demand than ever.
Students who choose to study this program often have a desire to help the sickly or have strong career and finance goals for the future. However, this field requires long-term commitment and dedication, so it is a decision that should not be taken lightly. Studying health and medicine will equip students in a deep understanding of practice and prevention of diseases. As a medical student, you will learn about the medical facilities, experience different methods of treatments, diagnose and identify ways to treat illnesses.
Medicine provides students with many specializations and sub-specialities to choose from. These are the 8 of the popular branches in medicine.
Cardiology: This field specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of ailments related to the heart. Treatments have to be provided for patients with heart diseases, heart failure, hereditary heart defects, and more.
Paediatrics: Deals with diagnosing and preventing diseases that affect infants, children, and teenagers. They also work as counsellors to the children and advice parents on childcare to improve the health fo their child.
Neurology: Involves the diagnosis and treatment of the nervous system. This includes diseases that affect the brain, nerves, muscles, and spinal cord.
Oncology: This field deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. There are three types of oncologists, namely surgical, medical, and radiation who work together to treat the patient.
Obstetrics-Gynaecology: This field involves the treatment of women during pregnancy and the well-being of the woman’s reproductive organs. These two fields are closely related, so they are often practised together.
Anesthesiology: This field involves making the surgical procedure a smooth and painless operation for patients. They also assist in the management and distribution of anaesthesia and its techniques, supply, and instruments.
Dermatology: Specializes in the diagnosing infections and treatment of hair, skin, scalp, and nails. This branch also treats skin diseases and tumours.
Otolaryngology: Involves diagnosing and treating illnesses related to the head and neck. They also perform surgery and medical therapy for the nose, throat, and ears to prevent respiratory ailments and injuries.
Emergency Medicine: Involves providing urgent medical attention to patients to prevent death or liability.
Good communication
Being able to communicate well is essential in this course. You have to communicate with your colleagues and inform them of the patient’s condition so they can act accordingly. You also need to communicate with empathy to the patient’s family and friends to advice them on the patient’s well-being.
A great listener
Being a good listen or is a great skill needed in this course. You need to be able to comprehend what your colleagues and patients are saying. Sometimes, patients may also want someone to talk to when they are feeling down and need reassurance. Just by lending a willing ear, you are helping them ease their worries.
Empathy
Having a strong sense of empathy allows you to understand a patient’s feelings and situation from their point of view. You will be able to understand them a lot more and communicate in a way that will help them feel better.
