Migrate To Study Abroad: 5 Tried-and-True Steps

Migrate To Study Abroad: 5 Tried-and-True Steps

You want to study abroad, but don’t know where to start.

Don’t worry, you’re not alone! We understand your confusion. With so much information online, you just don’t know which way to follow.

We have created a comprehensive guide with effective ways that help you migrate to study abroad.

1) Migrate Through A High School Study Abroad Program

This program gives you an early exposure to living abroad. A common trend among seniors, the high school study abroad program serves as a ‘trial session’ for those who still have dilemmas about getting their degree abroad.

Studying abroad in your high school years gives you a peek into international education, cultural differences, and independent living. The experience gives you a better perspective of the world which helps in your personal development. You also have the advantage of establishing connections with people who can assist in your application to pursue your tertiary education abroad.

2) A Student Exchange Program Helps You To Migrate Easier

The student exchange program offers you a chance to study overseas for up to a year. Here’s how it works: You will swap places with a student from the country of your choice. You will then live with a host family and learn about their traditions and customs to settle in, while the international student does the same in your home country.

This program is popular among first-year and second-year college students. Many applicants are students who want to experience studying overseas, but don’t have the budget or desire to migrate or commit staying there for too long. Yet, several of them came back satisfied, mature and independent from their experience from staying abroad. Some popular destinations are the UK, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.

If you wish to study abroad after this brief experience, you can switch to a twinning program to spend your remaining college years abroad. This program typically allows students to spend 1 to 2 years abroad, depending on the length of their course. Keep in mind that some universities only allow students to apply for a twinning program at the beginning of their enrolment. So, make sure to do your research thoroughly!

3) Sort Out Your Paperwork

From university applications to submitting documents for your Student Visa, the entire migrating process can be lengthy and confusing. Once you’ve decided where and what to study for your degree, it’s time think about your application. Some countries require international students to submit two applications: one for the university, and one for the course. You can find the application details on their official website, or contact the administrators for help.

As we all know, your Visa application can take months to be approved. We suggest compiling all documents in advance to avoid delays. Below are common documents you need to apply for a Student Visa:

  • Passport (valid for 6 months beyond your staying period)
  • Passport size photos
  • Proof of enrolment / Letter of acceptance
  • Statement of purpose
  • Financial proof as evidence that you are able to cover certain expenditures of your stay abroad (e.g., flight tickets, tuition and accommodation fees, living cost)
  • Health declaration form
  • *Language certificate

*You may need a language certificate if you’re studying abroad at places that require you to speak their native language. As students are required to go through a language test to obtain the certificate, it is best for you to research and prepare ahead of time.

If you’re planning to study in Malaysia, this article shows how to get your Visa approved quickly.

4) Apply For Scholarship & Grants

There are plenty of scholarships and grants for international students that can save you lots of money.

As there will be a tight competition for academic scholarships, it is best for you to get better grades to increase your chances of getting selected. Writing an impressive personal essay also helps you stand out better than other applicants. One good tip to nail your essay is by personalizing it instead of copying most of the content from the Internet.

5) Seek A Study Abroad Agency

Going through a study abroad agency eases the application and enrolment process.

Applying to universities yourself can be time-consuming and troublesome, as we’ve highlighted in an article here. Hence, an agency can get it done for you quickly and efficiently. Eduloco, for instance, is a student recruitment and study abroad agency that offers free counselling, university and Visa application, and accommodation recommendations. Our counsellors are professionally trained and equipped with the latest knowledge of university entry requirements in various countries. They will be glad to clear any of your doubts about studying abroad!

The Struggles of Applying to University by Yourself. One Question—Why?

The Struggles Of Applying To University By Yourself. One Question - Why?

Applying to university can be overwhelming.

Not only do you need to write a personal essay, but you also need to consider your test scores, look up universities that match your budget, and put in hours of research if the campus lifestyle is something you like.

As not everyone is readily equipped with the knowledge on how to start their application, high school graduates can get stuck in the process and end up delaying their application.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Find the right university
  • Choose the right major
  • Research the student life on campus
  • Write an essay explaining your reason for applying
  • Get recommendation letters (if required by your preferred school)
  • Compile all the relevant documents
  • Send them out and wait for a response

A Lack Of Knowledge

Here’s the other thing: how to start?

So many schools emphasize applying to university early to not miss the deadline, but they rarely provide a guide on how to actually do it. Even after a visit to the campus, many students are left feeling confused and uncertain about their future. There’s a surplus of courses and universities to choose from, yet you can’t make a decision.

Sound familiar?

applying to university without understanding the process can be confusing.

With a lack of knowledge and pressure to make a choice immediately, students can be prompted to choose a university that is popular with their friends, instead of going to one that will benefit them.

There’s also the pressure of picking a course that will ensure a job upon graduation. Combine that with the long waiting process for the offer letter, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for anxiety and frustration. No doubt, college applications are a long and tiresome process when you do it yourself.

A common oversight that students often make is missing out one or two crucial fields on those long college forms. A small mistake, but one which affects your entire application!

Different Requirements & Procedures

Another major issue that students face throughout the application process is trying to understand the requirements of each university. Several institutions have different requirements, which can be quite difficult to keep track of if you’re trying to apply to a few at the same time.

For example, Stanford University requires three different essays before offering the student an interview. On the other hand, the University of Nottingham may require students to submit their high school test scores first before moving on to the interview. Other requirements such as recommendation letters can also add another layer to the entire process.

The deadline for applications differs as well. While some universities offer interviews in the middle of the year, hence prompting students to apply before July, others may grant an interview only after the application is submitted.

With these mishaps combined, one can only imagine it leading to confusion and frustration over missed deadlines, rushed applications, and last-minute travel plans being cancelled because of incomplete documents.

Lack Of Time

With so many universities and so little time, how do you manage to conduct a thorough research on every school available?

First, you should have a checklist with you. Having one helps you keep track of what factors you want to consider in a university and if it meets your requirements. If you don’t have one, you can check out our college application checklist here!

Another frustrating issue is how some teachers can take forever to get back with a recommendation letter. Without a recommendation, you can’t submit your application. But if you don’t submit it quickly, you’ll miss the intake. There’s just no winning in this situation!

A lack of time is one of the frustrations of applying to university.

Lack of Finances

With each application submitted, there is a fee.

With the pressure of needing to apply to as many schools as possible, students may end up spending above their budget before even getting accepted into one. Because of this, students are not only frustrated about the process to submit university applications, but the procedure of applying for scholarships and financial aid as well.

The application fee itself may not be too pricey, but when the university counsellors are too busy to reply to your concerns on finances and tuition fees, the frustration adds up.

As a recently graduated high school student, you may be eligible for certain scholarships that you aren’t aware of. Many students don’t apply for certain scholarships thinking they won’t qualify for them, when there are actually other better options available.

An agency can help to ensure you don’t miss out on a potential scholarship!

A Long Waiting Process

At last, you’ve submitted those pesky documents once and for all!

Now comes the most nerve-wracking part—waiting to hear back from the colleges you applied to. You have high hopes, but the waiting process is agonizing!

You’re dying to know whether you’ve been accepted so that you can finally put your worries to rest, but the admissions office seems to take forever. There’s nothing you can do but wait and hope for the best while your future hangs precariously in their hands.

Why put yourself through all this trouble?

Apply to University Through An Agency or Nah?

Here’s where an agency can help.

If you’re an international student, you may not find everything you need online. Especially if you have any queries about the visa application procedure, since the information can be complicated and hard to understand.

Furthermore, some universities have multiple websites and the information you need may not be standardized for all. Hence, an agency would simplify the process for you by identifying the right universities that fit your qualifications and guide you through the process step-by-step.

Applying to university through an agency is more helpful compred to doing it yourself.

Applying to universities directly may sound tempting, but the process actually takes far longer than if you apply through an agency. You have the advantage of having the information at your fingertips and can take your time to consider the choices instead of rushing to make a decision.

Testimonials

Wong Hui Fen, Bachelor of Hospitality Management

I knew what I wanted to study, but I couldn’t choose a particular university. There were too many choices! My Form 6 senior recommended Eduloco to me, and I figured that I have nothing to lose.. since their services are free. I sent them an email and I actually got a reply in an hour! The counsellor was very friendly too. I’m very thankful that she was careful with my budget while recommending a university for me. I give Eduloco 5/5 for their excellent service!

Iqbal Imrani, Bachelor of Communication (Marketing Communication)

I want to study abroad to take the challenge of living in a foreign country alone. I chose Malaysia because it is more affordable than European countries, and it is closer to my home country, Indonesia. Eduloco really helped me a lot especially in applying and looking for accommodation for me. I studied at HELP University and I am very happy to have so many local friends here.

Nathan Tan, Bachelor of Arts in English Language

Eduloco helped me clear my doubts about getting an overseas degree locally. I wasn’t sure about the qualifications of an overseas degree if I fully studied for it in Malaysia, but an Eduloco counsellor assured me that I will still receive a high-quality certificate from the UK. Besides, it’s much cheaper if I complete my studies entirely in Malaysia. Now, I have a UK degree with a much affordable price!

Applying To College? Check These Off First!

Applying To College? Check These Off First!

Applying to college can be a hectic process.

Missing just one document can lead your application to be rejected. You need to focus on so many things at once, it feels like you’re going round in circles.

That’s why we’ve put together a college application checklist for you!

Applying To College: A Checklist

A checklist to apply to college.

List of Schools

Compile a list of the schools you want to apply to. Have a few choices on hand, this way you won’t feel dejected if your application isn’t successful. You’ve got other options to back you up!

Personal Essay

The meat of your application. Write about your skills, personal achievements, and extra-curricular activities you took part in. This is for the college to learn more about you and have a look at your writing skills. Keep it simple and interesting, but don’t clog it with too much information. Ask two people to proofread it for spelling and grammar mistakes. You want to give this your best shot!

Passport

Have your passport fully scanned in color to avoid leaving out the important details. You need a passport to prove your identity and enter the country, so don’t start your application without renewing your passport. You don’t want to be stuck in the airport without a way to go back home…it’s a nightmare!

High School Transcripts

These documents will show the classes you took and the credits you earned, which will be taken into account by the college before granting you admission. Different colleges may have different procedures, so send your transcripts as they request.

Letter of Recommendation

If you have a good relationship with your teachers, ask them to write a letter of recommendation to the university. This will give the college an insight on how you performed academically in the classroom and what kind of student you were. A good word put in by a teacher can go a long way!

Photos

You’re applying to college, so you definitely need to provide a photo of yourself. Taking a selfie would be cute, but it might get your application rejected (unfortunately). Instead, you should provide a photo of yourself in a white background. If you don’t have one, it may be time to book a shoot at a photo studio. Be sure to order in bulk as you never know when you might need them again!

Application Form

This will be provided by the institution. Take note of the application deadline and fill it up in detail. Remember to send it before the deadline, not after!

Health Declaration Form

This will be provided by the institution as well. Most colleges will require you to do a medical checkup upon arrival, so if you have any health conditions, do provide as much information as you can.

Application Fee

Pay for your application to officially submit it. If the cost is too high, speak to your guidance counsellor about waiving the fee so you can submit it for free. College counsellors are pretty understanding about a student’s limited finances, so do reach out to them first.

Once you’ve ticked these off, give yourself a pat on the back. You’ve completed the first step!

Next, contact your counsellor and inform them of your application before sending the documents for submission. If you followed the checklist closely, your application will be processed and they should get back to you in a few weeks.

All that’s left now is to wait for your acceptance letter! *clink glass*
