College Students Should Read This Before They Graduate

Do you want to graduate college with no regrets?

When I started college, I was unsure of my own journey. Other college students seemed to have it together. They were confident, bold, and outspoken.

Meanwhile, here I was, coming up with 100 excuses and what ifs in my head before asking a question in the lecture hall.

If this sounds familiar, you’re just like me five years ago.

College students may have issues related to stress and anxiety. Image source: Pexels

People normally assume that a student taking Communication would be confident and assertive, but I was the opposite. I was overthinking my words and actions and constantly doubting myself. I said yes to everything, which unfortunately, made me an easy target for manipulation. After I was stuck in a heap of extra tasks thrown by my group mates who knew I couldn’t say no, I told myself enough is enough.

A Common Issue Faced By College Students

I talked to a counsellor and discovered that I wasn’t alone. There were other college students who faced the same problems, and each of them had their own ways to cope with their issues. So, I started my own journey to come out of my shell.

My Advice To College Students

I spent several months trying different ways that would work for me, and I finally found one: Journaling. I understood myself better once I wrote my thoughts and feelings on paper. It has improved how I express myself and made me a better communicator. Now, I am proud to say that I’ve graduated college with no regrets, because I discovered my identity and worked through my insecurities and anxieties.

Here are other ways to help you graduate college with no regrets:

1) Focus on your mental health and personal growth

Working on your confidence requires patience and effort. However, the result is worth it. You can also work on your personal development by taking interesting subjects in college that can improve your interpersonal skills.

2) Manage your time and money responsibly

College life is all about experiencing new things, but bear in mind the consequences of overspending and last-minute studying. The best way is to keep track of your expenditures, and have a timetable for your studies.

3) Start thinking of your future after college

If you already have a plan, work on it. It is never too early to start thinking about your career as it places you one step ahead of your peers. Talking to lecturers is a good way to establish a connection with people from the industry.

Choosing A University: How To Pick One That Is Right For You

Choosing A University: How To Pick One That Is Right For You

Choosing a university can be a difficult task.

With hundreds of choices available, how do you know to pick one that aligns with your interests and can provide the top-notch student experience you deserve?

Heading off to college or university is an exciting experience that many young adults look forward to after graduating from high school. After all, it is a beginning of a new chapter in your journey as there is a multitude of new people to meet, an array of friendships to be formed, opportunities for personal development to take part in, and new experiences to digest!

Choosing a university that fits your lifestyle is important.

In this article, we’ll show you the steps and aspects of a university that you can consider to pick one that suits your preference. With the right amount of research of these factors, you’ll be able to identify the right institution for yourself in no time.

Organize A Checklist

Compile a list of the schools that you are interested to study at. Having a checklist to refer to will help narrow down your choices and provide a clear objective on the type of institutions you want to apply to.

Here are some factors that you can use in choosing a university for your list:

  • Location
  • Campus Facilities and Amenities
  • Tuition Fees and Financial Aid
  • Programmes and Courses
  • Student Development Activities
  • Student Accommodation
  • Career Services

If you need help, you can check out our guide for a college checklist here on how to make your application an effective one!

 Research The Course Content

Course content is a big factor that influences your decision in choosing a university. Hence, you should probably research on the courses and programmes of each institution first before adding it to your checklist.

First, decide on a course that is relevant to your interests. Later, you can identify the areas that you want to focus on and specialize in when it’s time to pick a major. However, if you are unsure of the direction you want to take, you can choose a course that allows you the flexibility to study different subjects and the freedom to select an area of specialization later on. There are several courses for this, such as the American Degree Programme.

The best way to do this is by researching the syllabus and curriculum of the programmes you’re interested in. You can refer to the university’s official website for information on the course requirement and modules or approach our friendly counsellors for additional information. They’ll be happy to help!

You can consult a counsellor to help in choosing a university.

It is advisable to match the course content with your own interests and consider how it will impact your career path in the future. Chances are that that you’ll go on to pursue a career in a similar field of your studies, so researching the course content is important to ensure that you will be making the right choice for your future.

Think Of The Location

Ask yourself these questions: how far do you want to be from home during your studies? Would you be more comfortable living in a big city or in a small town where home is close by?

If you prefer to be close to home (and your mom’s delicious cooking) then it might be better for you to look for a university in your home town or somewhere nearby.

However, if you’re eager to leave home and spread your wings, then you can explore universities in a different state or even another country if you’re feeling adventurous enough. Studying abroad is a great choice if you want to gain a fresh perspective on the way people work, interact, and immerse themselves in the culture of different parts of the world. Read up on the further advantages on studying abroad here

Choose a university that provides a support system when you study abroad.

If you do choose to study abroad, you have to realize that you’ll be moving away from the comfort of your family and into an environment that is unfamiliar to you. This means you’ll need to brush up on life skills such as cooking, doing your own laundry, buying groceries, and performing your part of the house chores.

Consider The Costs & Budget

Finances are something every student should consider when choosing a university. You’ll be spending on food, entertainment, accommodation, public transport, textbooks, and printing resources, so it’s important consider these factors and how they fit into your budget.

Some universities offer financial aid packages for students who want to study abroad, so do check with the university counsellor if you are eligible for those. However, if you decide to study in a local university nearby, you are likely to spend less money and can save for future expenses.

Ultimately, it depends on the kind of environment you want to study in and the leeway of your budget. Taking these costs into account and considering how they fit into your budget is an important factor to help you choose a university.

Check University Rankings

While university rankings are not completely accurate, they are a good indicator of the institution’s reputation and quality of programmes they offer.

For example, did you know that Taylor’s University’s Hospitality & Leisure Management subject held a position in the Top 20 of QS World University Rankings by Subject in 2020? It was this achievement that led the university to make a name for itself as the only institution in Malaysia with a Top 20 rank in the QS Subject category.

Thus, when doing your research, look at the overall ranking of the university, but be sure to check how well-rounded their courses are. Aside from Academic Reputation, here are some important factors that you should consider:

  • Employer Reputation
  • Campus Environment
  • Degree Accreditation
  • Industry Partnerships
  • Faculty/Student Ratio

Depending on what is important to you, you can check the ranking tables to get an estimate of the quality of the aspect of the university you are interested in.

For example, some students may prioritize the availability of Scholarships & Financial Aid as their main incentive, while others may prefer to look at the Faculty/Student Ratio for a more personalized teaching environment.

Look Up Active Clubs & Societies

Aside from academics, you want to be choosing a university that supports a healthy social life. One way to evaluate this is to check the active clubs and societies that are organizing current events. You can tell the quality of a student’s educational experience by just checking the number of clubs and societies that are running and actively participating in events.

Clubs and societies are a big part of the university’s community, so you should pick one that you will enjoy being a part of.  If you love basketball, check out the basketball team! If you’re a huge movie fanatic, keep an eye out for the film club. Most university campuses have a specific vibe that caters to the majority of students, so pick an atmosphere that will be a good fit for your personality!

Most universities list their clubs and societies on the official website or promotional brochures, so you can get an idea of the campus life there. After all, university isn’t just about studying, but enjoying your student experience as a whole!

Choosing a university isn’t too complicated when you have a clear objective in mind. Consider your priorities, focus on the goal, and enjoy your journey. As university life only happens once, be sure to make the most out of it while you can!

University can be one of the best experiences in your life as a college student. Find out some of the best ways to enjoy it here

What Your College Didn’t Tell You About IR 4.0

What Your College Didn't Tell You About IR 4.0

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) is happening!

We’ve come a long way since the first industrial revolution. After centuries of our efforts to streamline the production and manufacturing process, we finally find ourselves in the age of a remarkable transformation due to the digitization of manufacturing, called the Industrial Revolution 4.0, or IR 4.0. It is also being introduced in higher education. Students can now go to a college dedicated to implementing elements of Industry 4.0 in the education system to prepare them for the future workforce.

Industry 4.0 explores data and machine learning, revealing possibilities that past scientists never have imagined. IR 4.0 isn’t all about new and advanced systems and technology; this new phase shifts how companies operate today through the massive amounts of data obtained across different devices.

Before we begin, here’s what you need to know about Industry 4.0 and its predecessors.

Industry 4.0 timeline that college should include
The First Industrial Revolution (18th Century)

The mechanizing of the manufacturing process first began with manual labor and work animals. People incorporated water and steam to power engines in factories.

The Second Industrial Revolution (19th Century)

The use of electricity and steel was eminent in this phase to increase the speed and mobility of factory machinery. Assembly line was also introduced to ensure a continuous and systematic workflow in industrial operations, which was prominent in the early stages of automobile production.

The Third Industrial Revolution (20th Century)

Factories moved to the utilization of electronic equipment and computers to increase productivity of the manufacturing process. We began focusing on mechanical and digital technology (automation, IT systems, electronics).

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (Today)

IR 4.0 optimized the computerization from the third industrial revolution and developed new levels of improvement for the manufacturing industry we know today.

IR 4.0 adopts the use of electronics, automation, and computers from the past revolution and enhanced the manufacturing performance with smart systems and tools such as machine learning, Artificial Intelligence (AI), high-speed Internet, wireless trackers and scanners, and automated equipment.

Elements Of Industry 4.0 That Your College Should Tell You

The shift from IR 3.0 to IR 4.0 resulted in the emergence of new and efficient elements that ease a variety of processes in the manufacturing industries. As we shift to an era of advanced digitization in the workforce, you should choose a college that includes elements of Industry 4.0 in its courses. Some of the widely used ones are:

  • The internet of things (IoT)
  • The industrial internet of things (IIoT)
  • Cyber-physical systems (CPS)
  • Smart manufacture
  • Smart factories
  • Cloud computing
  • Cognitive computing
  • Artificial intelligence

So, what can IR 4.0 do for us?

Increase Convenience And Enhance Experiences

The Internet of Things (IoT) is actually simpler than it sounds. It refers to physical devices that can collect and share data with each other as long as they are connected to the Internet

Think of your lights or air conditioner unit that you can control with an application on your phone. This is made possible due to a seamless connection established between a wireless network and a sensor installed in the gadgets. The increased intelligence in these digital devices enables them to become more responsive, slowly unifying the digital universe with ours.

Want To Know The Best Part?

As consumers, we now have access to devices that are made to be more convenient, efficient, and fast. From homes to offices, we are surrounded by smart devices that can automatically turn on lights when we’re in the room, and even smart speakers that can play music just by listening to our command.

Improve Business Operations

Have you heard of big data? It is a massive volume of data that swarms a business on a daily basis. Organizations analyze the data for helpful insights that can improve their planning and decision-making process. Below are some real-world examples of the usage of big data:

  • Monitor health conditions through data obtained from fitness trackers
  • Navigate unfamiliar areas through road mapping in autonomous vehicles
  • Discover and predict consumer shopping habits

Big data stores massive amounts of data that is always growing and updating itself with the latest information. Its size and complexity are so extensive that no traditional data management system can handle the speed and size of the process.

The access to real-time data allows businesses to flourish. As it constantly updates itself through new data generated each second, businesses can obtain any real-time information regarding consumer behaviour, product sales report for different chains, profitability, and even company performance.

The best part is, it only takes a quick search to receive an abundance of data. Then, it will be analyzed by companies to determine the best ways to improve their operations in order to boost their productivity and profitability.

You can now obtain a certificate in data science or data analytics in college. As businesses around the world shift to big data, many students study big data analytics to broaden their career prospects in Industry 4.0

Optimize Supply Chain Management Performance

The supply chain industry is constantly pressured to produce cost-effective products quickly without jeopardizing the quality. Although humans are capable of carrying out various complex tasks in the industry, there are other factors that affect their performance such as human error, exhaustion, and injury.

Machine Learning (ML) helps reduce risks while carrying out complex tasks efficiently. A subset of Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning does not require specific programming to carry out its actions. It only relies on an algorithm or system to analyze large amounts of data, detect potential risks, and predict appropriate solutions.

With the predictive analysis function, manufacturers are able to predict risks and solve them by fixing flaws and errors detected by machines. This is especially important in high-risk jobs like transporting hazardous items and at construction sites.

Imagine how many lives could be saved when we have the technology that predicts and prevents workplace accidents.
